  CH 231- Quantitative Analysis

   Syllabus

This course is designed to provide a working knowledge of modern analytical chemistry. Analytical chemistry is the study of the theory and methods used for the determination of the proportions and identity of constituents in chemical systems. It deals with the questions; "What substances are present in a sample?" and "How much of a substance is present?" These kinds of questions are asked everyday throughout the chemical industry and academia. The analytical chemist must bring a number of techniques to bear on the problem. In general these techniques may be classified as either “Instrumental" or “Wet/Classical" chemical methods. This course emphasizes the latter while laying the groundwork for the student to appreciate the modern instrumental laboratory. In addition, the course provides a foundation in the statistical treatment of data. The laboratory stresses sampling techniques and preparation for both wet-chemical and instrumental measurements

The content of this course will aid in:

- planning and execution of experimental work

- developing abilities to record, analyze, and interpret laboratory data

- communication of experimental work

- understanding of the sources of experimental error and their propagation in calculated results

- understanding of the statistical nature of experimental error and its analysis

- use of computers and spreadsheets in the evaluation and treatment of data

- understanding complex chemical equilibrium

- developing an understanding of fundamental principles and techniques for:

- volumetric analysis,

- gravimetric analysis,

- spectrophotometric analysis

- separation science,

- electroanalytical analysis, and

- sample preparation.
