Stacey L. Barker (Associate Professor)
Social Work Department Chair and Program Director

BA in Social Work, Eastern Nazarene College
Professor Barker has been teaching at ENC since 2000, and began full-time in 2002. She has social work experience with the Department of Social Services in Kansas City, MO, as counselor and case manager in a residential program for pregnant and parenting teens in Biddeford, ME, and as an adoption homestudy caseworker in southern Maine. She is licensed as an independent clinical social worker (LICSW) in Massachusetts, and is a Ph.D. candidate in social welfare at the Mandel School of Applied Social Science at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. Her research interests center around the integration of spirituality and social work. She is a 2005 recipient of ENC’s Teaching Excellence Award.
At ENC, Professor Barker is faculty advisor to the Student Association of Social Workers, and the Students for Social Justice. She has served in the past as advisor to the Christian College Democrats club and the Best Buddies program. She currently serves on the Multicultural Affairs Committee.
In the community, Professor Barker is active in the Quincy Campaign Against Family Violence, an initiative designed to educate the Quincy community and promote a violence-free city. She also serves on the board of the Esther R. Sanger Center for Compassion, Inc. Professionally, Professor Barker is a member of the National Association of Social Workers, the North American Association of Christians in Social Work, the Council on Social Work Education, and the Association for Baccalaureate Program Directors.
She lives in Quincy with her husband, Jeff, who is an ENC religion professor and pastor
at Bethel (Quincy) Church of the Nazarene, and their two daughters.

Stephanie Sipe Flaherty, Adjunct Professor
MSW, Wheelock College
BA in Social Work, Eastern Nazarene College
After earning her BA in Social Work from ENC in 2000, Stephanie Sipe Flaherty worked at the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office as a Domestic Violence Victim and Witness Assistant. In May 2005 she received her MSW, with a concentration in Forensic Social Work, from the Advanced Standing Program at Wheelock College. She is currently the Executive Director of DOVE, Inc., an agency that she has served in various capacities since 2001. While at DOVE, she has been a Direct Care Worker, Community Outreach & Education Programs Coordinator, and Client & Community Services Director.
Stephanie continues to be a positive influence in the community through her roles in the Governor's Commission on Domestic Violence, Quincy's Child Witness to Violence Program, the Children's Advocacy Center of Norfolk County, the Quincy Campaign Against Family Violence, the Quincy Mayor's Commission on Women, and the Address Confidentiality Program. She also regularly holds trainings and presentations on domestic violence-related issues at various agencies in the area. She is currently teaching Introduction to Social Work, Generalist Practice with Groups, and Generalist Practice with Organizations and Communities.
Karen G. Marshall, Adjunct Professor

Karen G. Marshall brings many talents to the ENC community. With two Master’s degrees in both Social Work and Business with a concentration in Marketing, she brings a unique perspective to the Social Work Department. Karen began co-teaching and guest-lecturing at Eastern Nazarene College in September 2006, and she currently teaches Human Behavior and the Social Environment, Social Policy Analysis, and Economics for Social Work. In the past couple of years, Karen has become increasingly involved in the Greater Boston area. She has served as a Social Work Intern at the Dimock Community Health Center and as Community Organizer at the Madison Park Development Corporation, both in Roxbury, MA. She has also interned at the Neighborhood House Charter School in Dorchester, MA. In 2005 she created the One Basketball Camp as a way for college students to use the sport as a ministry. Since 2003 Karen had served as Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at ENC, and this year holds the role of head coach. Her marketing background has landed her such roles as Marketing/Educational Consultant at Supreme-Education in Stoneham, MA and Program Assistant at the Cambridge Business Development Center in Cambridge, MA.
Karen has a wide array of leadership experience. From 1998-2002 she served as Youth Director at the First Church of the Nazarene in Tallahassee, FL. She created a Minority Alumni group that mentors minority students at her former high school in Rockville, CT. In January 2007, she was chosen to represent the U.S. at the 3rd Wave Conference for Emerging Global Youth Leaders in Johannesburg, South Africa. She is currently involved in The Spot ministry at ENC and in The Antidote, a program committed to changing methods of outreach to urban youth.
Major Philip E. Miller, Adjunct Professor

Major Philip E. Miller has an extensive background in the social work and military fields. With a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master’s in Social Work, Major Miller has a history of clinical experience. He has worked as a Clinical Outpatient therapist, as a Clinical Social Worker, and as Director of a geriatric program in a major hospital. In 2000 he became a Family Advocacy Officer of the United States Air Force, commanding the spouse and child maltreatment program in Fayetteville, NC. Two years later he moved to Japan to serve as Chief of the Alcohol and Drug Prevention and Treatment Program for the U.S. Air Force. He currently serves the U.S. Air Force as a Deputy Flight Commander for the Life Skills Support Center at Hanscom AFB, MA.
Major Miller’s academic experience includes working as Social Work Field Instructor for undergraduate students from the University of Tennessee, the University of North Carolina, and from Methodist College. He has also taught as Adjunct Professor at Cleveland State Community College in Cleveland, TN. In addition, Major Miller has given a wide variety of presentations on topics such as marriage, stress management, suicide prevention, alcohol prevention, and fathering, among others. At ENC, he has taught Marriage and Family Relations and currently teaches Generalist Practice with Individuals and Families.
Major Miller is the recipient of various awards ranging from the Pacific Air Command Social Worker of The Year, 2004, to the Air Force Commendation Medal, 2002 and 2005.
