MU101 Voice Class (1 credit)
A survey for Music majors, other than those taking private voice lessons, covering the following areas: correct breathing, voice production, materials for teaching (especially in the classroom), and pronunciation techniques in English, Italian, French, and German. Available both semesters.

MU103, 104 Piano Class (1 credit)
Study of scales, arpeggios, and cadences, applied to the harmonization of folk melodies. This class covers graded classroom material in preparation for public school teaching. Score reading, transposition, accompanying, and piano repertoire are covered. This class must be repeated until passing of proficiency exam.

MU105, 106, 205, 206 Ear Training (2 credits)
Designed to develop the aural skills required by the professional Musician. This course includes sight singing and/or dictation of scales, intervals, diatonic and chromatic melodies, triads, seventh chords, harmonic progressions, and two to four part Music. Computer software and programmed recordings are available to aid students in individual practice sections.

MU141, 142 Applied Music (1 credit)

Private lessons in voice, piano, another instrument or Music composition for non-Music majors; secondary applied study for majors; one half-hour lesson per week.

MU141, 142 Applied Music (2 credits)
Private lessons in voice, piano, another instrument or Music composition for non-Music majors; secondary applied study for majors; forty minute lesson per week.

MU180 History of Rock & Roll and Popular Music in the USA (3 credits)

An overall history of popular Music in America, with an emphasis on mainstream popular Music since 1954. The stylistic development of popular Music is traced, and interpretive strategies including methods of aural analysis are acquired. The simultaneous independence and interdependence of black and white Musical cultures in America are related. An understanding of popular songs and texts in a historical perspective is developed. No prerequisite course; Music reading, or performance skills are required.

MU191 Song Writing I (3 credits)
An introduction to the techniques, thought processes, and critical/interpretive skills used in the art of Music composition. Develops the ability to use basic aesthetic principles in applied composition. Provides coaching in the composition and performance of a variety of short pieces and a substantial final project. Music composition in any style, including popular, jazz and classical, is encouraged and accepted. Requires Music reading skills and performance ability on an instrument in any single style (popular, jazz or classical). Vocalists must be proficient on another instrument.

MU192 Song Writing II (3 credits)
Creative techniques and skills of composition, thought processes, and critical/interpretive skills introduced in MU191 are expanded. The ability to apply basic aesthetic principles in applied composition is further developed. Music composition in any style, including popular, jazz and classical, is encouraged and accepted.

MU201, 202 Applied Music (2 credits)
Private lessons in voice, piano, another instrument, or Music composition for lower division Music majors and non-majors.

MU203 Ensemble (.5 credit)
A Cappella Choir, Choral Union, Chamber Singers, Gospel Choir, Symphonic Winds, Jazz Band, Quincy Symphony Orchestra, Guitar Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, and Handbell Choir.

MU210 Practical Church Music (3 credits)
Designed to help prepare ministerial students and other interested students to be able to direct the Music program in churches where a trained Musician is not available. Song leading, etc. included.

MU211 Fundamentals of Music I (2 credits)
Notation: staves, clefs, pitch, duration and time signatures. Design and construction of scales: major and minor modes and key signatures are covered in this course, as well as interval construction and identification.

MU212 Fundamentals of Music II (2 credits)
Construction and identification of triads and inversions; construction and identification of seventh chords and inversions; principles of spacing and doubling in four part harmonization. Introduction to voice leading for progressions of diatonic triads in root position is also covered.

MU213 Percussion Methods (1 credit)

Timpani, bass drum, snare drum, cymbals, etc. Methods and materials for school Music are covered.

MU214 Brass Methods (1 credit)
Trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, tuba. Methods and materials for school Music are covered.

MU216 Woodwind Methods (1 credit)
Flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, and bassoon. Methods and materials for school Music are covered.

MU221 String Methods (1 credit)
Violin, viola, cello, bass. This course covers correct tone production, fingering, ensemble playing, and care of instruments. Methods and materials for school Music are covered.

MU230 World Music (3 credits)
Designed for the general student. This course in ethnoMusicology will describe and analyze the Music of Africa, black and native America, Asia and Eastern Europe in the context of human life. Music will be examined in its diverse historical, social, and cultural contexts.

MU231 Diction for Singers (3 credits)
Phonetics applied to English, Italian, French, German and Latin vocal literature. This course includes study of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).

MU251 Acoustics of Music (3 credits)
The science of the physical basis of Music, sound waves and their characteristics, vibratory sources of sound, harmony and scales, tuning and temperament, hearing; electronic recording, reproducing and synthesizing of sound. Offered every year.
Prerequisite: MU211 or equivalent previously or concurrently

MU261 Music Theory I (3 credits)
Review of fundamentals; basic harmonic theory and analysis of tonal Music; diatonic triads in major and minor keys, spacing, doubling, voice leading and root position progressions. Offered every year.
Prerequisite: MU212 or placement examination

MU262 Music Theory II (3 credits)
Theory, analysis and SATB harmonization; first and second inversions, cadences, non-chord tones, dominant and diatonic seventh chords. Offered every year.
Prerequisite: MU261

MU272-273 Audio Recording and Music Technology (2 credits)
Basic audio recording and production techniques, focusing on hardware, software, microphone placement, mixing , signal flow, processing, editing, mix-down, and mastering commonly used programs such as Sound Forge, Pro Tools, and Finale.
Prerequisite: MU212 or placement examination

MU281 Music History and Analysis I (3 credits)
Survey and analysis of the development of Western Music, from the early Christian era to the present. This course covers the integration of this Music with that of other cultures.
Prerequisite: MU212

MU282 Music History and Analysis II (3 credits)
Survey and analysis of the development of Western Music, from the early Christian era to the present. This course covers the integration of this Music with that of other cultures.
Prerequisite: MU281

MU290 MIDI Applications in Music Education (2 credits)
Introduction to MIDI and recording techniques. This course covers the study of software used in Music education and programs, which play Music on a synthesizer.

MU310 Choral Conducting (3 credits)
Study of basic techniques in conducting, analysis and score reading, and choral literature.

MU311 Instrumental Conducting (3 credits)
Continued development of conducting techniques learned in MU310 Choral Conducting; analysis and score reading and instrumental literature.

MU312 Orchestration (3 credits)
Study of the instruments in the orchestra, use in various combinations, clefs transposition study, score study, and the orchestration of various piano pieces (Baroque, Classical and Romantic) for instrumental combinations. This course covers the arranging for school ensembles, and includes the production of scores with the use of Finale.

MU321 Curriculum and Methods of Music (5-12) (3 credits)
Objectives, philosophies, methods and materials of teaching choral and instrumental Music. This course provides demonstration lessons, related field-based activities in nearby schools. Attention is given to teaching general Music and Music theory and the use of media in middle school and high school levels.

MU351 Church Music History and Hymnology (3 credits)
A study of liturgy in the Roman Catholic and Lutheran churches, and church Music in the worship of the main divisions of the Protestant movement in England and America.

MU352 Church Music Methods, Materials, and Administration (3 credits)
Objectives, philosophies, methods, and materials and administration of church Music including a survey of sacred Music with emphasis upon style and liturgical function.

MU361 Music Theory III (3 credits)
Theory, analysis, harmonization and composition; secondary chord functions, diatonic and common tone modulation via secondary dominants, sequences, binary and ternary song forms. Offered every year.
Prerequisite: MU262

MU362 Music Theory IV (3 credits)
Theory, analysis, harmonization and composition; mode mixture, Neapolitan chord, augmented sixth chords, chromatic modulation, altered chords, and late nineteenth century practices.
Prerequisite: MU361

MU371 Curriculum and Methods of Music (K-9) (3 credits)
Objectives, philosophies, methods and materials of teaching Music in elementary schools. This course provides demonstration lessons and related field-based activities in nearby schools.
Prerequisite: ED210, ED310

MU372 - 373 Music Recording Techniques III and IV (2 credits each)
The study and implementation of advanced recording techniques and equipment theory.

MU381 Music History and Analysis III (3 credits)
Detailed examination of Musical forms drawn from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic repertoire.
Prerequisites: MU281, 282

MU401, 402 Applied Music (2 credits)
Private lessons in voice, piano, another instrument, or Music composition for upper division Music majors. A forty minute lesson per week is provided.
Prerequisites: MU282, MU362, Solfeggio proficiency, and permission of Music faculty


MU451 Piano Pedagogy (2 credits)
Methods and materials of teaching piano privately and in group lessons. This course is offered on demand.


MU 472 - 473 Music Recording Techniques V-VI (2 credits each)
Advanced techniques in recording. This course is designed to bring the student to the level of a professional recording engineer.


MU481 Twentieth Century Music (3 credits)
Styles and trends in European and American Music since 1900 and analysis of representative compositions. Brief compositions are written in various styles.
Prerequisite: MU282


MU492 Practicum in Music Education (12-18 credits)
Prerequisites: ED210, ED310, MU 321, and MU371
