Secondary Education (Subject Area), Grades 8-12
COURSE REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the Liberal Arts Core , the Education Core , and the courses required for a specified Liberal Arts Major, the following courses are required for students seeking teacher licensure in Secondary Education:

  • ED320 Classroom Management
  • SE420 Curriculum and Methods of Secondary Education
  • ED462 Reading in the Content Area
  • SE499 Practicum (12 credit hours)
  • ED499z Practicum Seminar (2 credit hours)

Course Descriptions

SE420 General Curriculum and Methods of Secondary Education
Various plans and methods for the motivation and direction of learning in the secondary school are emphasized. Opportunity is given to study and apply the particular major content to the classroom. There are 25 pre-practicum hours to complete for this course.
Prerequisites: SE305, a Junior or Senior and in good standing in the Teacher education program

SE499 Secondary Education Practicum (6-12 credit hours)
Observing, assisting and teaching within a secondary school setting under the direction of a cooperating practitioner and supervised by a college supervisor is required of all secondary education majors for certification. Students within the classroom will include regular students as well as special needs students.
Prerequisites: ED210, ED310, SN311, ED243, SE305, SE430, RE462, SE420, SN420, a cumulative GPA of 2.5, approval of Teacher education faculty committee

RE462 Reading in the Content Area
This course is designed to develop skills that will enable the teacher to facilitate the student's reading of content area material. Significant research will be reviewed and projects developed to provide the future teacher with practical applications of the findings. Attention will be given to all areas of the curriculum to be correlated with reading instruction.
Prerequisite: a Junior or Senior and in good standing in the Teacher education program
