Students who seek general licensure in early childhood and elementary education and/or Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities (pre-K-8 and 5-12) must take the following Liberal Arts Major:

  1. 2 Lab Sciences
  2. 1 Math Course (MA101 or MA109)
  3. GO210 API
  4. GO220 World Political Geography
  5. HI205 The American Experience
  6. EN221 American Lit I or EN222 American Lit II
  7. BA231 Principles of Economics I or 232 Principles of Economics II
  8. MA 107 - Mathematics for Elementary Teachers
  9. A Math Methods Course or MA111 College Algebra, MA122 Trigonometry, or MA118 Intro to Math Statistics
  10. 1 English or 1 History Course

A senior comprehensive exam is required for all Liberal Arts education majors.

All faculty members at Eastern Nazarene College share in the responsibility of preparing students for teaching careers. Teacher education is a major function of the college.

In addition to the Liberal Arts Core , the Education Core , and the courses required for a specified Liberal Arts Major, the following courses are required for students seeking teacher licensure in Elementary Education:

  • ED320 Classroom Management
  • RE441 Teaching Reading and Children's Literature
  • EL325 Elementary Curriculum and Methods I
  • EL330 Elementary Curriculum and Methods II
  • PE252 Personal Health and Wellness
  • EL499 Practicum (12 credit hours)
  • ED499z Practicum Seminar (2 credit hours)

Course Descriptions

EL325 Elementary Curriculum and Methods I
This course develops competency in instructing language arts and the humanities (including social studies and expressive arts); general teaching-learning strategies; basic elements in curriculum design; classroom management; mainstreaming; and their application to elementary school children including those with special needs. There are 25 pre-practicum hours to complete for this course.
Prerequisites: A Junior or Senior and in good standing in the Teacher education program

RE441 The Teaching of Reading and Children's Literature
The teaching of the modern methods and techniques of reading in all the elementary school grades with emphasis on readiness and the developmental stages of reading are explored, with a focus on classroom strategies. The use of literature in the reading program, adaptation for the special student, assessment, readiness, and developmental stages of reading. There are 25 pre-practicum hours to complete this course.
Prerequisites: A Senior and in good standing in the Teacher education program

EL330 Elementary Curriculum and Methods II
This course develops competency in instructing in the natural sciences (including mathematics, science and health); general teaching-learning strategies; basic elements in curriculum design; classroom management; mainstreaming and their application to elementary school children including those with special needs. There are 25 pre-practicum hours to complete for this course.
Prerequisite: A Junior or Senior and in good standing in the Teacher education program
