Michael W. Ballard • Associate Professor • Communication Arts

Professor Ballard returned to the ENC faculty in the fall of 2005 after
four years away from the college. Prior to his time away from the
college, he was the chair of the communication arts department from
1997-2000, and he received a teaching excellence award in May of 2001.
During the four years he was away, Ballard was the scene and light
designer for the theatre department at Niagara University in Lewiston,
New York, where he taught theatre tech and design courses, in addition
to designing scenery for 16 productions and lights for 28 productions.
He also has taught and designed at Loyola University in Chicago, Eastern
College in St. Davids, Penn., and in his previous years at ENC, he
designed and was technical director for over fifty productions. Among
his favorite designs are ENC productions of "The Wizard of Oz",“Big River,” “The Imaginary Invalid,” “Oliver,” “Phantom of the Opera,” “West Side Story,” “The Pirates of Penzance,” and “You Can’t Take it With You.” His wife, Margaret, is the associate registrar at ENC.

Eunice Ferreira-LaMere • Assistant Professor • Communication Arts

A director, actor and playwright, Professor Ferreira seeks to combine scholarship with artistic vision and practice. She is a Ph.D. candidate in theatre history at Tufts University where doctoral research focuses on post-independence Cape Verdean theatre and its relationship to issues of language and cultural identity. She has produced, directed and choreographed a variety of plays ranging from Greek tragedy to musical comedy including a multicultural production of The Wizard of Oz, Tartuffe, Quilters, Guys and Dolls, The Skin of Our Teeth and Songs for a New World for which she hosted a master class with its Tony award-winning composer, Jason Robert Brown. Her original works include Elvis, a Harley and a Nun, Poetry in Motion, Off the Wall and Soul Search. Professor Ferreira regularly presents at national and international conferences. Her areas of interest include intercultural performance, world theatre, musical theatre, play development, and theatre for social change.

John G. Tierney • Instructor • Communication Arts

Professor Tierney has been teaching at ENC since 2000 and was recognized for five years of service in May 2005. For three years he served as a photo and print journalist in the U.S. Navy. For eight years he was a broadcaster for the Armed Forces Radio Television Service, in positions such as news director, disc jockey, television programmer, and operations supervisor. Prof. Tierney has also taught at Newbury College and at Boston College. He is advisor to the college radio station (WENC), and is working to create an on-campus television studio. He has also helped to place students in internships in the past, such as at Quincy Cable Access. Among his goals for the near future is to earn his Ph.D. Prof. Tierney also serves as a lector at his home church, Holy Family Parish, in East Taunton, Mass. He lives with his wife and daughter in Taunton.

Soterios C. Zoulas • Associate Professor • Communication Arts Chair
M.A., Assumption College
B.A., Boston University
Professor Zoulas has earned a B.A. in Philosophy and Politics from Boston University and M.A. in Modern European History from Assumption College. He also attended the mid career program at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. He focused on the nexus of press, politics and policy at the Shorenstein Institute. Professor Zoulas pursed a doctorate in Education and Communications at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He is an accredited member of the Public Relations Society of America.
Professor Zoulas presented a response paper on press restrictions in Nigeria during the 1970s military dictatorship at Oxford University in the summer of 2004. In September, 2005, he presented a talk on intercultural communications at a workshop sponsored by University of West, Bristol, UK in Northwest Greece. In November, 2005, he was part of a panel discussion on religion, media and popular culture sponsored by Calvin College and National Communication Association. He has also organized several conferences on press, politics and policy during the past ten years in Cambridge and Boston MA, Providence, RI, Houston, Texas and San Francisco, CA. He has published several articles in various publications including the Boston Herald, Worcester Telegram & Gazette and Connections Magazine.
Mr. Zoulas has taught communications, government and history at Quincy College for ten years. He chaired the communications department there for three years and was chair of the faculty senate for two years. He has also taught communications at Assumption College, Framingham State College and Newbury College. In 2001, he developed and taught a new course on school reform and the media at Brown University.
Professor Zoulas is a veteran communications practitioner who has more than 25 years experience in public relations, journalism, radio and television, including positions as director of public affairs for the Massachusetts Board of Regents of Higher Education and director of media relations for the Massachusetts Board of Education and director of Communications at the Annenberg Institute, Brown University.
Professor Zoulas was a daily news reporter for the Worcester Telegram & Gazette and also worked for the New York Times. He produced, directed and hosted a nationally award winning documentary on disabled children. He also produced and hosted awarding winner radio and television talk and interview programs for Boston area radio and television stations. He was also named the most effective press secretary by the State House Press Corps.
Professor Zoulas is also president of Zoulas Communications, a public relations consulting firm that is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. His firm’s web address is www.zoulascommunications.com. Clients have included public and private colleges and universities, college loan companies, large and small businesses and professional organizations, government agencies, trade associations and nonprofit corporations. Professor Zoulas has consulted with many top colleges and universities including Wellesley College, the University of Massachusetts and Simmons College.
