Department Objectives

  1. To enable students to think, write, speak and listen critically, clearly and effectively for professional and interpersonal purposes.
  2. To afford a wide variety of artistic and intellectual performance opportunities aimed at nurturing creative expression, artistic poise and aesthetic appreciation.
  3. To develop students’ ability to analyze and effectively use the communication process at all levels.
  4. To acquaint students with the vast scope and influence of all communication media in society.
  5. To provide practical experience in the effective application of communication skills in the production and use of various media.
  6. To equip students for graduate study and/or occupations in theatre, public relations, advertising, journalism, broadcasting and teaching.
  7. To increase students’ awareness, understanding and appreciation of aesthetic values and foster a cultural atmosphere on campus.

Students may select more than one area of concentration in Communication Arts.

The college’s Intercultural Literacy requirement may be fulfilled by selecting CO297 Intercultural Performance or CO399 Travel Seminar: The London Stage. CO220 Interpersonal Communication may fulfill the social science requirement.

Communication Arts majors are required to pass an oral comprehensive examination and complete a senior project. Communication Arts seniors must also develop and make an original 20-30 minute presentation of a project. Seniors are responsible for all aspects of designing and implementing the projects with the advice of a Communication Arts faculty member.

In addition to the three core courses, each student will select an area of concentration. Choices include Journalism, Television and Radio, Public Relations and Advertising, Theatre, and Speech Communication.
