Biology is a dynamic and exciting umbrella covering many disciplines such as genetics, biochemistry, zoology, molecular biology, anatomy, marine biology, ecology, and physiology, all of which have in common the study of certain aspects of living organisms.
The Department of Biology at Eastern Nazarene College, in the tradition of a liberal arts college, believes you will be best prepared by establishing a solid foundation with a core of critical biology courses, then specializing with electives to meet the requirements of a particular career path. This approach has allowed us to successfully prepare individuals for a broad range of career endeavors.
DEPARTMENT OBJECTIVES
- To provide an opportunity for the student to become familiar with the principal phenomena of life and to foster the continuous development of understanding and proficiency in the biological sciences.
- To provide training in molecular, cellular, organismal, ecological, and environmental Biology and to assist the student in the application of the knowledge acquired in collateral preparation in Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics.
- To encourage an understanding and appreciation of inquiry and its practice as the “process” underlying the logic of Biology and its ancillary sciences; to help the student learn some of the major methods and skills involved, including evaluation and relevance.
- To provide training and technical background for the student having Biology prerequisites for professional preparation.
- To prepare the student for graduate study in science, the health professions, and/or careers in Biology, including teaching, technology, public service, and research.
In addition to the Liberal Arts Core requirements, all Biology majors must take a minimum
of 31 credit hours in Biology, including the following core courses:
BI103 Introduction to Cell Biology and Genetics
BI104 Introduction to Ecology and Diversity
BI105 Introduction to Plants and Animals
BI390 Junior Seminar in Biology
BI490 Senior Seminar in Biology
Biology elective from Area I (Cell and Molecular) must include lab
Biology elective from Area II (Ecology and Field) must include lab
Biology elective from Area III (Organismal) must include lab
Faculty approved co-op or internship (credit not required)
Bachelor of Science in Biology
A Bachelor of Science is the appropriate track for those students desiring to pursue graduate
study in Biology or preparation in the health professions. In addition to the above Core
courses, 13 elective credits in Biology are required and must include at least one 400 level
course, plus cognates of CH103-4, General Chemistry I and II; CH321-2, Organic Chemistry
I and II; PY201-2 General Physics I and II; MA118, Introduction to Statistics; and MA151,
Calculus I.
The Bachelor of Arts is appropriate for the student preparing for a career in many allied health
professions, secondary education, laboratory technician or similar field. In addition to the
Biology Core courses, 8 elective credits in Biology are required and must include at least one 300 or 400 level course, plus cognates of CH103-4 General Chemistry I and II, or CH101-2 Chemistry and Introduction to Organic Chemistry, and MA118 Introduction to Statistics.
Elective Groups:
Area I (Cell and Molecular)
BI212 Genetics
BI213 Genetics lab
BI220 Forensic Science
BI231 Analytical Methods in Biology
BI310 Bioinformatics
BI350 Advanced lab in Forensic Science
BI393 Cell Biology
BI394 Cell Biology and Immunology lab
BI395 Immunology
BI491 Biochemistry lab
BI492 Biochemistry I
BI493 Biochemistry II

BI352 Microbiology
BI370 Comparative Anatomy and Embryology
BI451 Physiology
Biology Minor
For a minor in Biology, a student must take the following courses:
BI103 Introduction to Cell Biology and Genetics with lab
BI104 Introduction to Ecology and Diversity with lab
BI105 Introduction to Plants and Animals with lab
Plus any Biology elective at the 200 level or above, including lab.
Students may also major in Biology and choose elective courses that will prepare them for future study. The recommended sequences of courses include Pre-Medicine; Pre-Physical Therapy; Pre-Occupational Therapy and Pre-Pharmacy. Each of these programs may be pursued in combination with a variety of majors - typically as part of a Biology, Chemistry, or Health Science (BS) degree. The requirements for these areas of preparation are listed under Preparatory Programs/Pre-Graduate Studies.
For more information on the biology major, please read the course descriptions.
