GODSPELL

October 16, 18, 23, 24, and 25 at 7:30 pm with a 4:00 pm matinee on October 18
The ENC Communication Arts Department will present “GODSPELL,” one of
Broadway's most successful musicals, by Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak. Based on the Gospel according to St. Matthew, the production infuses youthful energy and the promise of new life into performers and audiences alike.
“GODSPELL recounts the ministry and teachings of Jesus in an unexpected and upbeat style,” said director and associate professor of communications, Michael Ballard.
“Blending scripture and hymn texts with an eclectic, rock-based musical score and actions springing from theatre games and circus antics, Jesus teaches his fledgling followers how to live in the world in love, peace, joy and community.”
Set in an ancient circus tent, this unique vision of “GODSPELL” will incorporate a cast of 13, each personifying clowns in costume, make-up and action.
“A group of strangers will embark on a life-changing journey as they receive the teachings of Jesus and serve as witnesses to his life,” said producer and associate professor Eunice Ferreira.
“GODSPELL” features an exuberant score including “Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord,” “Save the People,” “Day by Day,” “Light of the World,” and “Turn Back O Man.” The musical has been performed worldwide, revived in 2000, with another much-anticipated Broadway revival in the works.
“The purpose of the play is to retell the ‘greatest story ever told,’ to inform, to entertain, to amuse, and to inspire the audiences who will share the experience,” said Ballard.
Joining Ballard and Ferreira will be a talented production team, including musical director Ed Broms, choreographer Lakeisha Gilliard, and costume designer Meg Cowe. ENC alum Andrea Thompson will also lend her creative expertise as assistant choreographer.
The play will be performed in the Edith Cove Fine Arts Center on October 16, 18, and 23 through 25. All performances will begin at 7:30 pm, with a matinee performance at 4:00 pm on October 18. There will also be school matinee performances at 10 am on October 16, 17 and 23.
Tickets are $12 for general admission.
