The 2008 Maine State Government Summer Internship Program will run from
Tuesday, May 27 through Friday, August 15, for a total of 12 weeks.
Orientation will take place at 9:30am on Tuesday, May 27 in
Augusta. Location to be determined.

Salary
All interns will receive a weekly salary of $340 gross pay, funded by
the state agency. Salary withholdings will include: federal and state
taxes (approx. 25%); 7.65% contribution to Maine State Retirement
System (partially refundable at end of Internship Program); and
Medicare cost of 1.45%. Interns are considered temporary, unclassified
employees of the State of Maine and are not paid for holidays or other
non-work time.
Independence Day, Friday (July 4) is a state holiday, so interns will
not be scheduled to work; nor will they be eligible for holiday pay.
However, interns will be allowed to make up these 8 hours. Arrangements
must be made directly with the intern’s supervisor.
The Program also includes an educational component, which requires that
interns attend a seminar in Augusta. In addition, the Program will
conclude with a reception at the Blaine House on the last day of the
Internship, at which interns will be awarded a Certification of
Completion by the Governor or his designee. More details about these
events will be forthcoming.
Academic credit will not be granted under the Maine State Government
Summer Internship Program. Students seeking academic credit must make
arrangements with academic programs at their own college or university.

Join the Ocean Mammal
Institute (OMI) in Maui as a research intern as we pioneer the way in
the most important fields of study in the 21st century: Conservation
Biology and Ecopsychology. Together, we can turn the tide of
extinction!
Course Instructor, Dr. Marsha Green:
1. Dr. Green is OMI's President and founder.
2. She has a doctorate from Temple University in animal behavior and
physiological
psychology.
3. She is a licensed psychologist.
4. Dr. Green is a full time Professor at Albright College in Reading
Pennsylvania,
where she has been teaching for 38 years.
5. Dr. Green she served as Chair of the Psychology Department at
Albright until 1993
and founded the Psychobiology and Environmental
Psychobiology programs.
6. She has taught this Internship since 1986.
As an OMI research
intern you will be expected to do the following:
1. Study the biology and behavior of humpback whales while you observe
and record
their spectacular behaviors.
2. Learn and apply the principles of field research design as you
participate in our '
ongoing field study on the impact of boats on the
behavior of the humpback whale.
3. Gain a personal understanding of the politics of protecting
endangered species.
4. Learn about current research on whales and dolphins around the world
and related
conservation issues.
5. Be introduced to the field of Ecopsychology, which studies the
relationship between
humans and the natural world.
What a typical day is
like:
1. Conduct
shore-based data collection. This involves tracking whales and
boats
with a theodolite and recording whale
behaviors. All this is conducted on the top of
a hill where you can look down on the whales.
This is conducted approx. 4 hours
everyday in the hot sun.
2. Plot and graph your data daily.
3. Read and discuss articles for the evening discussion. There
are over 70 articles in
addition to the book you will be expected to
read. Evening discussions are
conducted every night and last approx 2 hours.
If taking this course
for credit from your institution you will have to meet the following
additional requirements:
Take 2 written tests.
Write a research paper.
Write an essay.
Living arrangements:
Four to five students in a 2 bedroom furnished apartment.
Apartment has full kitchen, living area, bedrooms and bathrooms.

MARINE NATURALIST -- SUMMER INTERNSHIP POSITION
Where:
The Port Townsend Marine Science Center is a public, non-profit marine
education facility located in Fort Worden State Park. The facilities
are comprised of two buildings which house a small hands-on Marine
Exhibit with local nearshore animals and plants, a Natural History
Exhibit featuring shorelines, past and present, with an emphasis on
geology, a citizen science research Discovery Lab and two fully
equipped classrooms.

Description:
Lead hands-on education programs for the general public.
Lead interpretive programs in the marine and natural history exhibits.

development organization committed to neighborhood revitalization in
Dorchester, the largest and most diverse neighborhood of Boston.
Internship Detail: We are looking for a part-time intern in the spring
of 2008 to conduct research focused on the Codman Square community of
Dorchester. This position will consist largely of compiling statistics

Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge:
A no-kill facility committed to rescuing abused, abandoned and unwanted
Exotic Cates. Since 1992, we have rescued more than 200 exotic animals,
giving them a caring, lifelong home at the Refuge. These magnificent
creatures are the unfortunate, unwanted products of the private trade
in exotic animals; most of them would have been destroyed if we were
not able to give them a home.
ANIMAL
KEEPER POSITION
Responsible for the daily care of
Tigers, Lions, Cougars, Black Bears, Black Leopard, African Servai,
Caracal, Bobcats, Rhesus Macaque, and Hoof Stock. Duties include animal
husbandry, enrichment, record keeping of animal behavior, educational
public tours, and customer service. Daily care includes – cleaning,
feeding, medicating the animals; assisting with maintenance, upkeep,
and habitat construction. A Bachelor’s Degree in an animal related
discipline is preferred. Nine positions are opened.
HORTICULTURE
INTERN POSITION
Assist with the maintenance and improvement of the landscaped areas of
the Refuge, including the planting, pruning and watering of trees,
shrubs and perennials, spreading mulch on landscaped areas, labeling of
plant displays, mowing; weed, undergrowth and plant litter removal.
Responsible for the identification and removal of toxic plants; as well
as the development of browse for environmental enrichment. This
internship requires the completion of an Independent Project.
Must be able to lift 50+ lbs. Requires the completion of a Bachelor’s
Degree in Horticulture, Botany, or a related field involving
horticultural and landscaping practices. One position is opened.
COMPENSATION: $50 weekly cash
stipend for food. Housing is provided on the refuge. Amenities: Heat,
A/C, utilities paid, full bath, kitchen, washer & dryer, satellite
TV, free long distance, internet service.
