(EDh1)
Special Education teacher, resource room

Employer: Daniel W. Merritt Elementary School

Description of current position: I provide special education services to about 15 students, concentrating on reading and math remedial help. I manage their IEPs, goals and objectives of education, and facilitate Pupil Evaluation Team meetings.

Description of company: I work in a school of about 110 students, K-8. There are 5 elementary schools in the district and a regional high school. The district is in Washington County, Maine, in a low-income and low-opportunity area.

How did you find this position?

I had initially applied for a position as a third grade teacher in another school, a position that I was not offered. Special education teachers are desperately needed in this area. Although I did not have the certification necessary, I was tracked down by the special education director. I had worked as a paraprofessional in special ed. previously and had some experience. I was hired after two interviews.

Graduating year from ENC: 2002

Concentration: Elementary education

What was your first job after graduation?

Substitute teaching and working as a per diem receptionist in a doctor's office

What other jobs have you held?
Educational Technician (paraprofessional) at Sedgwick Elementary School; Middle School Teacher at Life Christian Academy; Retail Associate at L.L. Bean Factory Store

Is there anything you wish you had done differently during your years at ENC?
I wish that I had attended an extra year just to take middle school and special ed. methods courses even if they weren't my major. In this manner, I could have made myself even more marketable to the schools in the area. Education jobs are very difficult to get in Maine due to the high influx of people from out of state moving in who have experience teaching elsewhere.

How would you describe the current job market in your field?
Very competitive in elementary education. High school and jr. high math and science teachers are desperately needed, as are special education teachers

What skills and/or personality traits are particularly important in your field for a competitive job search?
Flexibility, the ability to be highly qualified, experience in the schools, friendliness, willing to do whatever is asked of you.
