Eastern Nazarene Freshman Burns / Tierney Selected to TCCC All-Conference Teams

May 1, 2008.  Quincy, Mass.  It was announced today that Eastern Nazarene student-athlete's Jacqueline Tierney (Taunton, Mass./Taunton HS) and Amber Burns (Fall River, Mass./Durfee HS) were selected to represent The Commonwealth Coast Conference on the 2008 All-TCCC Second and Honorable Mention Teams respectively.

Tierney, a freshman coming from a powerful Taunton HS Softball program, earned Second Team All-TCCC Honors as she led the Crusaders at the plate batting a strong .352 placing her 15th among all TCCC batters over the entire course of the regular season.  Tierney drove in 16 runs while at the plate, doubled 12 times, led the Crusaders in steals with 9 and crossed the plate 19 times herself.  The freshman played what is perhaps the most difficult infield position in softball, third base, facing hits at close range and managed a fielding percentage of .865, committing only 13 errors on the season.

Burns, a freshman and three sport athlete (volleyball, basketball and softball), was selected to the All-TCCC Honorable Mention Team as she hit .321 over the course of the season, but in TCCC games only, she hit a whopping .404 with 4 home runs while scoring 10 runs and driving in 15 RBI's.   She lined up mostly in centerfield for the Crusaders, and earned a fielding percentage of .910 as she committed only 6 errors on the year.  Her speed in the outfield and potent arm caught several runners trying to take extra bases on the Crusaders as she threw them out.

Crusaders’ end season facing powerful Golden Bears hurler, Bowers.

April 26, 2008.  Quincy, Mass.  An eight run sixth inning blew Game 1 of this TCCC doubleheader wide open as Western New England College, led by pitcher JR Laura Bower, went on to shut out Eastern Nazarene College, 14-0.

Eastern Nazarene threatened early in the game as lead off hitter FR Bethany Greenfield (Parsippany, NJ) tripled down the right field line and FR Jacqueline Tierny (Taunton, Mass.) walked on and stole second base.  But the Golden Bears pitcher Bowers got the visitor’s out of the jam with her third strike out of the inning to nullify the danger.  This was a glimpse of what was to come for the rest of the game.  Bowers pitching was spot on and carried the team to victory as the Crusaders only had one other inning in the game where they threatened with runners in scoring position, the fifth.  On the mound Bowers allowed only 3 hits and 1 walk as she struck out a total of 14 batters, several by picking apart the inside portion of the plate.

The Golden Bears took advantage of timely hitting and a difficult game for the Crusaders pitching staff on the mound.

Then in the fourth inning the Golden Bears added three more runs with a run scored on a wild pitch and a 2 RBI single to make it 4-0 in favor of the Golden Bears.

In the fifth a sacrifice-fly and a RBI single down the third base line made the score 6-0.

In the sixth the Crusader pitching troubles started as the visitors took advantage of 7 walks, 1 error, 3 wild pitches, 1 passed ball and 4 hits to make the score 14-0 by the third out in the inning.

The Crusaders could not gather any momentum on the bottom half of the inning as Bowers shut them down once again.

Eastern Nazarene’s pitching staff gave up 9 hits on the day but 13 walks.

Game 2 went much differently as the Crusaders allowed a 6 run first but battled back for 5 of their own in the second to trail by one 6-5.

In the bottom of the fifth the Crusaders jumped on top of the Golden Bears pitching to add two runs and overtake the lead 7-6.

But the Golden Bears bounced back adding two of their own and having inserted ace Bowers, the Crusaders could not respond as the visitors won 8-7 in an exciting game.

Crusaders’ Bats Come to Life in the Sixth En Route to a 7-2 Victory.

April 25, 2008.  (Quincy, Mass.)  In game 1 of the TCCC doubleheader between Regis College and Eastern Nazarene, the score was close until the sixth when the Crusaders JR Janna Fernandes (Taunton, Mass.) smashed a homer with two runners on base to break the tie and put the Crusaders up 5-2.  The Crusaders threatened again by putting runners on first and second as FR Laura Giberson (Hingham, Mass.) hit a RBI single up against the “Screen Monster” in left field to make it 6-2.  Freshman Bethany Greenfield (Parsippany, NJ) then followed Giberson with an RBI double of her own to put the Crusaders up by five, 7-2.

In the first inning of the game, Regis' JR Ashley Paolini (Epping, NH) got the Pride going with a pop fly that was not tracked down by the Crusaders, upon reaching second, the Crusaders had missed the throw and the quick Paolini took two more bags to score and make it 1-0.

In the bottom half of the first, Bethany Greenfield led off the game for the Crusaders in a big way tripling and scoring on a groundout.  But Regis bounced back to take the lead in the second inning.  After loading the bases, Crusader starting pitcher JR Rebekah Sorenson (Quincy, Mass.) walked one run in to give the Pride a 2-1 lead.  However the  pressure was relieved when the Crusaders turned a double play to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 4th inning, SR Melaina Genovese (Hingham, Mass.) hit a solo shot to tie the game at two runs a side.  In the fifth, both teams threatened but each stranded two runners on base.

In the top of the 6th Pride's FR Ashley Wright (Essex, Mass.) doubled to spark a Regis rally but the Crusaders’ defense quickly put out the flames which then the Crusaders ensued on the five run sixth.

The Pride of Regis College threatened in the 7th with two runners on but the pressure was soon relieved when JR Rachel Sorenson (Quincy, Mass.) recorded her fourth strikeout of the game and the third out of the inning to cap a 7-2 Crusaders’ victory.

Rachel Sorenson pitched 3 ⅔ relief innings of shutout softball.  Freshman Amber Burns (Fall River, Mass.) led the Crusaders at the plate going 3 for 3 with three singles.  Defensively, JR Janna Fernandes (Taunton, Mass.) threw out three base runners trying to steal.

For the Regis Pride, Wright went 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored.  Junior Ashley Paolini went 3 for 4 at the dish with one run scored.

In the second half the double header the Pride threatened early as they loaded the bases with two singles and a Crusader fielding error.  But two infield fly outs got the home team out of danger.  In the second inning, the Crusaders JR Jami Swedick (Averill Park, NY) got on first base by being hit by a pitch just before Amber Burns unloaded a pitch over the right field fence to put the Crusaders up 2-0.

The Pride responded in the 4th though when FR Amanda Carlson (Ayer, Mass.) got on with a single and then reached second on a bobbled grounder that put Ashley Wright on first.  When Wright was nearly picked off at first, Carlson went to third and then stole home as the Crusaders tried to catch Wright in the run down but failed.  Wright advanced to third and home from infield ground outs before the Crusaders ended the inning with the ball game knotted up at 2-2.

The decisive run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth as JR Hannah Rauchfuss (Elmont, NY) doubled on and Burns came up with her fifth consecutive hit of the day which sent Rauchfuss around third to score and give the Crusaders the one run advantage, 3-2.

Though the Pride had put two runners on base in the top of the seventh, pitcher Rachel Sorensen forced the visitors into two groundouts and a strike out to end the game for her 7th win of the season, as she allowed 1 ER on 5 hits, 3 walks and 7 strikeouts.

Eastern Nazarene's Amber Burns and Rebekah Sorensen went 2 for 3 in the second game, Burns with the 2 run homer and 3 RBI's.

Regis' Ashley Paolini led the Pride as she went 2 for 4 at the plate and threw 6 innings of 6 hit ball while walking 2 and striking out 2.

While Regis ended their season today, Eastern Nazarene closes out their season tomorrow, Saturday, April 26th with a 2:30 pm ball game against TCCC opponent Western New England College at Quincy's Mitchell/McCoy Field.

Go Crusaders!!!

Eastern Nazarene Hammers Back to Back Home Runs in Game 2 to split with Curry.

April 19, 2008.  Quincy, Mass.  In the bottom of the fourth inning, trailing by a 4-0 score, Eastern Nazarene’s JR Janna Fernandes (Taunton, Mass.) jacked a two run home run out of the park to put the Crusaders to within two runs at 4-2.  And before the Crusaders stopped high fiving each other, FR Amber Burns (Fall River, Mass.) hit her own solo shot over the centerfield field fence to pick up another run.  Beginning to feel reminiscent of an earlier season contest where the Crusaders tagged four home runs in one inning, Eastern Nazarene’s next batter, FR Laura Giberson (Hingham, Mass.), nearly tied the game up as she drove a pitch off the centerfield fence before the Colonels could end the inning with the score at 4-3.

It surprised no one except the visitors, for anyone who has been watching the Crusaders this year knows there are seven batters in their line up who have hit for home runs, five of those with more than one.  The home team kept the momentum going in the fifth inning as co-captain JR Hannah Rauchfuss (Elmont, NY) RBI singled home FR Jacqueline Tierney (Taunton, Mass.) who was on second.  Junior Rebekah Sorensen (Quincy, Mass.) then crossed home plate from third on a Colonel error while Fernandes had her hot bat swinging as she doubled down the right field line to score Rauchfuss to make the score 6-4.

The Crusaders added an insurance run in the sixth as JR Brittany Bedillion (Perkasie, PA) singled on.  Tierney then singled and Bedillion moved to third where she scored moments later on a wild pitch to make it 7-3.  In the top half of the seventh and last inning, Eastern Nazarene pitcher JR Rachel Sorensen (Quincy, Mass.) got the side out with fly balls to right, center and left field to end the game having given up seven hits in seven innings and "0" earned runs to go with her 2 strike outs and 2 walks.

The Colonels had scored three runs in the first off a misplayed fly ball with the bases loaded scoring all on base and the other Colonel run came in the top of the fourth as an errant throw to the plate allowed the runner on third to make the lead 4-0 before the Crusaders would respond in the bottom half of the inning.

Eastern Nazarene racked up 13 hits on the game as Rauchfuss led the pack on 3 for 3 hitting with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI.  Fernandes went 2 for 2 with a walk, a run scored and 3 RBI’s, two of those from her home run.  Then Tierney and Bedillion followed with 2 for 4 hitting, each with a run scored.

In game one of this The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) match up, the Colonels with consistent and balanced hitting scored one in the first, two in the second and one again in the third to take a 4-0 lead through three innings.

The visiting Colonels tacked on four more runs, one coming in the fifth and three in the sixth to cap off the games scoring at 8-0.

Eastern Nazarene was held scoreless while only amassing 4 hits over six innings.

Eastern Nazarene’s SO Stephanie Pestilli (Norwell, Mass.) went 1 for 2 and walked on once to lead the Crusaders at the plate.  Junior Rebekah Sorensen was credited with the loss as she gave up 9 hits and 4 walks while striking out 5 over six innings.

Eastern Nazarene (6-26 / 6-14 TCCC) hosts Regis College next Friday, April 28th at 3:00 pm for another TCCC match up.

Crusaders take two from leopards.

April 16, 2008.  Boston, Mass. – Junior Rachel Sorensen (Quincy, Mass.) picked up a pair of wins in the circle and freshman Jacqueline Tierney (Taunton, Mass.) went 4-for-9 with four runs scored and three RBI as the Eastern Nazarene College softball team swept a The Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader from Wentworth, 13-10, and 10-0.

The Crusaders struck first with two runs in the top of the first, as Tierney placed runners on second and third with a double.  She would score the second run of the inning on an outfield error.  Wentworth came back to cut the lead to 2-1 after an inning of play.

Eastern Nazarene tallied six times in the top of the second, beginning with three consecutive doubles by junior Hannah Rauchfuss (Elmont, N.J.), junior Janna Fernandes (Taunton, Mass.), and a two-run double by Tierney.  With runners on second and third, senior Melaina Genovese (Hingham, Mass.) delivered a two-run single up the middle.  However, the Leopards would respond with five runs of their own in the home half of the inning then three more in the third to lead 9-8.

The fifth inning saw the Crusaders take a 10-9 lead with both runners coming across on wild pitches, but a pair of runners were stranded on base as the top of the fifth ended.  The Leopards tied up the score, 10-10 with a sacrifice fly to left.

Eastern Nazarene took the lead for good in the sixth inning when Genovese scored on a wild pitch and junior Rebekah Sorensen (Quincy, Mass.) scored on an error.  The Crusaders tacked on another run in the seventh on an RBI groundout by Tierney.

Rachel Sorensen picked up the win (3-14) in relief for Eastern Nazarene.  Pitching five innings, she allowed four unearned runs on seven hits and struck out four.  Rebekah Sorensen pitched the first two innings for ENC, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits and struck out three.  At the plate, Tierney was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI, while Genovese was 2-for-5 with two RBI.

The nightcap was all Eastern Nazarene, as the visitors scored twice in the second and added five runs in the third to break open the game.  Freshman Amber Burns (Fall River, Mass.) drove in both second-inning runs with a double, while Fernandes had a pair of RBI's in the third inning, an inning that saw the Leopards commit three errors.  The Crusaders tacked on a run in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Genovese and would add three more runs in the top of the fifth to account for the final margin of victory.

Rachel Sorensen improved to 4-14, allowing three hits and striking out four batters.  She did not allow an extra base hit until the fifth inning.  At the plate Fernandes was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Tierney was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.  Burns would drive in two runs in the win.

Crusaders shut down by Nor'easters pitching.

April 14, 2008.  Quincy, Mass.  Eastern Nazarene was pressed by the pitching of UNE by getting only six hits out of each game in this The Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader.

In game one, the Crusaders were able to score first as they pushed one across the plate in the first inning with a walk on, the runner advancing to third on an error and then an infield sacrifice.  Twice they put runners on third and thrice on second base, but were unable to capitalize stranding nine runners on base through seven innings.

The Nor’easters tied the game up in the second inning with two singles and an infield sacrifice hit and then added two runs in third, fourth and seventh innings to earn the 7-1 victory of game one.

The Crusader’s Jacqueline Tierney (Taunton, Mass.) led the Crusaders at the plate going 2 for 4.

In the second game Crusader’s JR Rachel Sorensen (Quincy, Mass.) and Nor’easters FR Amber Zablowsky (Rochester, Mass.) each threw a shut out through six innings before the Nor’easters unleashed a storm of hits in the seventh inning.  Six hits and six runs later, the visitors had snapped Sorensen’s spell over them.  The Crusaders could not duplicate this out put in the bottom of the seventh and the visitors would go on to sweep the Crusaders.

Eastern Nazarene’s FR Jacqueline Tierney (Taunton, Mass.) and FR Amber Burns (Fall River, Mass.) each went 2 for 3, with a double, to lead the Crusaders at the plate.

Eastern Nazarene (3-23 / 3-11 TCCC) faces Wentworth Institute of Technology on Wednesday April 16th at 3:30 pm in Boston, Mass.

Eastern Nazarene sweeps New England College with “4 bagger” specialty.

April 9, 2008.  Quincy, Mass.  Eastern Nazarene and New England College produced one of the seasons highlight series with late inning heroics, hard hits and close plays at the plate.

The Pilgrims jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning with a flurry of hitting. Then ni the top of the 3rd a home run over the left field fence gave them a 5-0 lead.

In a well played game thus far, it quickly became the classic it was destined to be.  With the Crusaders trailing by 5 runs, FR Amber Burns (Fall River, Mass.) hit a lead-off home run out of centerfield to draw one run back.  Freshman Laura Giberson (Hingham, Mass.) then singled before FR Jacqueline Tierney (Taunton, Mass.) cleared the bases with a  hard shot over the centerfield scoreboard to make the score 5-3.  Senior co-captain Melaina Genovese (Hingham, Mass.) then doubled to right center and was hit home by JR Janna Fernandes’ (Taunton, Mass.) dinger of her own over the towering left field fence, knotting the game up at 5-5.

The Pilgrims changed pitchers to slow the Crusaders surge, but the plan did not work.  Junior co-captain Hannah Rauchfuss (Elmont, NY) continued the long ball display with the fourth home run of the inning to make this one of ENC’s landmark mark innings and give the Crusaders a 6-5 lead.

The Pilgrims resolve though continued and two more runs in the fourth again put them in front, 7-6.

The game stayed this way until the bottom of the 6th when the Crusaders hit their 5th home run of the game.  With Burns on third base, Laura Giberson stepped to the plate and hit her first ENC career home run to give the Crusaders a one run lead again, 8-7.

It could be counted on by now that the Pilgrims had winning the game on their mind too, as another two run rally put them ahead yet again, 9-8.

It would be a mistake though to count the Crusaders out of this game.  Jacqueline Tierney hit a lead-off double and then stole third and advanced home on a wild throw to tie the game up at 9-9.  Two batters later the Crusader co-captains won the game as Hannah Rauchfuss’ infield hit would be enough for Melaina Genovese to beat the throw home and win in the bottom of the 7th in dramatic fashion.  A feeling you would otherwise have in Basketball or Football was felt today, that whoever had possession of the ball, was up to bat last, would win the game.

Eastern Nazarene was led by Jacqueline Tierney’s 3 for 4 hitting including 2 RBI’s and 2 runs scored.  Laura Giberson went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI’s and 2 runs scored.  And Janna Fernandes went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI’s and one run scored as Amber Burns went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Game two would not be any less exciting than game one.  Eastern Nazarene grabbed the lead in the first inning as they loaded the bases, but were only able to score one run from this opportunity.  New England College hustled their way to a three run second inning on the back of a few fielding errors and held a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the 7th

Co-captain Hannah Rauchfuss played a pivotal role in the outcome of this game too as she stepped to the plate with two outs and two runners on.  Rauchfuss then smashed her second 4 bagger of the day, the teams sixth of the day, to tie the game at 5-5 and send it into extra innings.

In the top of the 8th, with one out and a runner on third, the Pilgrims had an excellent opportunity to take the lead but a strike out and foul out sent the Crusaders to the plate.

Then with Janna Fernandes on second base with two outs, Crusaders FR Bethany Greenfield (Parsippany, NJ) kept hope alive as she singled Fernandes over to third base.  Fernandes then jumped at the chance to steal home as a pitch in the dirt got past the Pilgrims catcher.  Hustling home to beat the tag, Fernandes scored the winning run, ending the game, and completing the Crusaders first sweep of the season in dramatic fashion.

Crusader Hannah Rauchfuss went 2 for 2 at the plate with 2 walks, a run scored and 4 RBI’s.  Junior Rebekah Sorensen (Quincy, Mass.) followed with 2 for 4 hitting, including a RBI and a run scored.

Junior Rachel Sorensen (Quincy, Mass.) threw a complete game as she scattered 8 hits, struck out 2 and walked 1 as no earned runs were recorded toward her outing.

Eastern Nazarene (3-19 / 3-7 TCCC) faces Endicott College in Beverly, Mass.

Eastern Nazarene Snaps Losing Streak.

April 8th, 2008.  Quincy, Mass.  The Eastern Nazarene College Crusaders won its first game of the 2008 season today with a 9-3 win over the AMCats of Anna Maria College.  Nine different Crusaders hit the ball eleven times as freshmen Jacqueline Tierney (Taunton, Mass.) and Amber Burns (Fall River, Mass.) led the team.  Tierney went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 4 RBI and hard shot over the centerfield fence in the 4th inning.  Burns went 2 for 2 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI’s, including her own long shot over the right field fence in the 3rd inning.

Junior Rebekah Sorensen (Quincy, Mass.) earned the victory pitching 5 innings allowing 6 hits and 1 run while striking out 4 and walking 1.

In Game two of the doubleheader Anna Maria reversed their fortunes winning 7-3.  The AMCats collected 13 hits with batters one through five hitting safely 2 or more times a piece and accounted for all 7 runs.

Tierney led the Crusaders again going 2 for 4 with a RBI and a run scored.  Junior Rachel Sorensen (Quincy, Mass.) lasted 4 innings giving up 11 hits, 3 earned runs as she struck out 2 and walked 1.

Eastern Nazarene (1-19) hosts New England College on Wednesday April 9, 2008 at 3:30 pm.

In the fourth, Salve Regina reached on a one-out single to left center and then came home on a bases-loaded infield single for the game’s first run.

A pinch hit homerun in the fifth inning with two outs and a runner aboard second base scored two runs and Salve Regina (12-8; 10-0 TCCC) scored four times with two outs in the sixth to end the game under the mercy rule. Crusader’s Brittany Bedillion delivered the 2 RBI double in the 7th for the Crusaders to make the game interesting although Rachel Sorensen would be charged with the loss and go to 2-9 on the season.  Box Game 2

The Crusaders (4-18, 2-10) travel to Curry College on Saturday April 21st as the CCC season continues to unfold, game time 1:00 pm.

Go Crusaders!!!

Eastern Nazarene rallies in the 7th to sweep Anna Maria, 6-1 / 8-2.

March 31st, 2007.  Quincy, MA.  The Crusaders did it in dramatic fashion today to beat the visiting AMCats and pull their Commonwealth Coast Conference record even to 2-2.

In the opening game of this doubleheader both the Crusaders and AMCats jumped on the scoreboard early.  In the 1st inning Crusader Rebecca Welch hit a RBI single to give the Crusaders the lead.  But in the bottom of the inning the AMCats fought right back with a run of their own.

But it was the Crusaders who kept mounting an offense.  Picking up where they left off, the team managed three runs in the 2nd as Kristen Burke and Hannah Rauchfuss, and  Jen Westcott would reach base on a walk, a single and an error to ultimately cross the plate and put the Crusaders in front 4-1.

The AMCats threatened in the sixth inning with the bases loaded but pitcher Rebekah Sorensen put out the threat and held them scoreless through the end of the game as it finished in favor of the Crusaders, 6-1.

Rauchfuss would go 2 for 3 with a RBI and one run scored to lead the Crusaders eight hit effort today.

Rebekah Sorensen went the distance for the Crusaders and recorded her second win of the season, giving up 4 hits while striking out 8 and allowing just 1run. Box Game 1

The second game started similarly in that each team scored early.  The AMCats pushed two runs across the plate in the first but the Crusaders responded with two runs of their own in the second.  Rauchfuss and Kelly Moser singled in runs to even up the score at 2-2.

The 2-2 score stood until the top of the 7th as the Crusaders loaded and then unloaded the bases.  With the bags full, AMCats pitcher missed the edge of the strike zone to walk Kayla Overly home from third base.  Welch then singled and doubles by Rauchfuss and Burke emptied the bases before the inning ended at 8-2.  Rachel Sorensen then closed out the side with two strike outs and a caught line drive for the third out.
