Eastern Nazarene seniors close careers with 6-3 victory.

 

April 23, 2008.  Quincy, Mass.- Eastern Nazarene seniors Billy Stephens (Quincy, Mass.) and Matt Kauffman (Simpsonville, SC) had nearly identical results today as each won a point in doubles for the Crusaders while their singles matches ended with a 10-5 super-set tie breaker.  The only difference is that Kauffman's ended in a loss 6-4, 3-6 (5-10) at # 5 singles and Stephen's a win 4-6, 6-4 (10-5) at #1 singles. 

 

The crucial point in the match for the Crusaders though was at #4 singles as SO Tyler Restrick (Bel Air, MD) won the decisive fifth point .   

 

 

Eastern Nazarene edged out by Suffolk, 5-4.

 

April 22, 2008.  Quincy, Mass.- Eastern Nazarene played strongly in one half of the match today, and did not live up to expectations in the other half. 

 

While teaming up effectively in doubles today, winning 3 of 3 doubles matches, the Crusaders were only able to pick up 1 of the 6 singles matches and fell to the Rams 5-4 on the Crusader courts today. 

 

Senior Matt Kauffman (Simpsonville, SC) was the only Crusader who won at both singles, #5 6-3 / 6-1, and doubles 8-3, as he teamed up with SO Michael Chan (Quincy, Mass.).

 

Other wise, the Rams made up for their doubles losses by winning the five other singles matches.

 

Eastern Nazarene faces UMass-Dartmouth, Wednesday April 23rd back on the Crusader courts at 3:30 pm.

Eastern Nazarene facing TCCC's top brass.

 

April 15, 2008.  Quincy, Mass.- Eastern Nazarene was shut down, 9-0, by the TCCC third place Roger Williams on Tuesday afternoon.  

 

Crusader JR Jack Sahlman (Burlington, Conn) played an outstanding match at third singles as he lost 7-6 (4) / 7-5 giving a Hawk SO Kyle Baker (Bolton, Conn.) a run for his money.  In a match consisting of long volley's and shots landing inches from the baselines, Sahlman showed a strong quality of play vs. one of the TCCC top teams.

 

Eastern Nazarane plays again tomorrow, April 16th vs. Wentworth at the Winsor School (directions: http://www.winsor.edu/the_school/directions.aspx ) at 6:30 pm.  Roger Williams is home to Nichols College on Thursday, April 17 at 4:00 pm. 

 

Eastern Nazarene squeezed to fourth straight loss.

 

April 14, 2008.  Dudely, Mass.- Eastern Nazarene fell to Nichols College Monday in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC)play by the score of 7-2.  The Crusaders SR Matthew Kauffman (Simpsonville, SC) won at 5th singles 7-5, 7-5 and SR Billy Stephens (Quincy, Mass.) along with SO Jordan Corbin (Fallston, MD) won at 3rd doubles 8-6.

 

While the Crusaders dropped today's result, this may have been the closest match of the season.  Four of their seven losses were narrow defeats.  In 1st, 2nd and 3rd singles, the matches went to three sets with the Bison out dueling the Crusaders down the stretch.  In 2nd doubles, JR Michael Chan (Quincy, Mass.) and Matt Kauffman fell to the Bison 8-6. 

 

Eastern Nazarene hosts Roger Williams University Tuesday, April 15th at 3:30 pm.

 

Eastern Nazarene beats Gordon, 6-3.

April 7, 2008.  Quincy, Mass.  The Eastern Nazarene College Crusaders forged a strong victory over a tough Gordon College Scot team this afternoon in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) action.  The Crusaders swept all three doubles matches and split the six singles matches to improve to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the TCCC, while Gordon falls to 2-10 and 0-4 in the TCCC.  Crusaders Coach Popa commented that "the Scot's are better than their record might appear", and that, "this is an important win in conference."

Captain and senior Billy Stephens (Quincy, Mass.) won in first singles 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) to lead the Crusaders while junior Jack Sahlman (Burlington, CT) and SR Matt Kauffman (Simpsonville, SC) were able to win comfortably in two sets.

Freshman Andrew Van Rheenen (Warminster, PA) was able to win at second singles as FR Dan Cormier (Ipswich, Mass.) and FR Scott Pichard (Coto de Caza, Califwere) able to pick up the Scot's second and third points at fourth and fifth singles.

 

Eastern Nazarene travels to Salve Regina University for more TCCC action on Wednesday April 9th and Gordon is at TCCC opponent Colby-Sawyer on the same date.

 

Eastern Nazarene snaps drought with UMass-Boston with 6-3 triumph.

April 3rd, 2008.  Quincy, Mass. -  Over a decade had past since Eastern Nazarene was able to topple the Beacon's of UMass-Boston on the courts.  The depth in the squad this year was the difference in the win column.  Last year while coming close in a 5-4 loss, the Crusaders finally were able to turn the table this year.  While not able to win at first or second singles, neither first doubles, the Crusaders won at third, fourth, fifth and sixth singles, as well as first and second doubles breaking the long standing losing streak with their neighboring Dorchester, Mass. opponents for their third match win of the season.

The performance of the day came from JR Jack Sahlman (Burlington, Conn.) as he won at third singles in a two set tie-breaker for the Crusaders 6-4, 5-7 (10-4), putting the icing on the cake for an outstanding Crusader team effort.

 

Eastern Nazarene's JR Matt Woodley (Setauket, NY) was able to win in 5th singles and 3rd doubles and SR Matt Kauffman (Simpsonville, SC) in 6th singles and 2nd doubles as the two helped account for four of the six points the Crusaders would score today.

ENC hosts Univ. of Mass.-Dartmouth Friday, April 4th in Quincy, Mass. while UMB faces Univ. of Southern Maine on Saturday, April 5th in Dorchester, Mass.
 

 

Eastern Nazarene falls to Western New England in TCCC play.

April 2nd, 2008.  Springfield, Mass.  Crusaders open The Commonwealth Coast Conference season dropping the decision 9-0 loss to Golden Bears.

 

 

Eastern Nazarene opens regular season in Hilton Head, SC.

March 10th-14th, 2008.  Hilton Head, SC.  Traveling south during Spring Break has become customary for the Men's Tennis program.  This year they upped their level of competition and came back with a 1-4 record but much valuable experience gained.

The Crusaders opened against strong opponent Mount Union College and though losing 9-0, each Crusader played hard and focused through their match.  On the 3rd and 4th days of action the Crusaders lost close matches, 6-3 to PSU-Behrend and 5-4 to Defiance College.  The Crusaders picked up their first win of the season with a 8-1 win over RPI before beginning the drive back home.

Junior Jack Sahlman (Burlington, Conn.) led the Crusaders on the court playing at-to near his best level of tennis vs. stronger opponents. 

The Crusaders open their New England Season vs. Becker College in Worcester, Mass. when they return.
