The 2007-2008 ENCYs: More than a Banquet!

May 6th, 2008.  Quincy, Mass.  For two years now, the Eastern Nazarene College Athletics Department has honored the talents and efforts of its’ dedicated student-athlete’s with an Athletic Awards Ceremony called “The ENCYs “.  While there are student-athlete’s who receive their due recognition through The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) All-Conference teams, there are several other noteworthy student-athlete’s whose deserved efforts and accomplishments go unnoticed.  So the ENC Athletic Department has turned its’ annual dinner banquet into an awards ceremony presentation resembling that of ESPN’s “ESPYs” Award Show.

This black tie appropriate event allows the ENC community and Athletics Department to vote on previously nominated student-athlete’s to determine the winner in various categories.  The awards range from academic in nature (Male and Female Academic Excellence Award), to Athletic in nature (Male and Female Rookie and Athlete of the Year), to Character and Athletic in nature (Mr. and Ms. Crusader of the Year).  The last of which, Mr./Ms. Crusader of the Year, is deemed the most esteemed award.  This “ENCY” is awarded to the male and female student-athlete who best embodies both the athletic prowess and the spirit of Christ in their attitudes and actions.

Besides honoring the award winners with an “ENCY”, a 9 inch crystal obelisk with the name of the award and its’ winner engraved onto it, Athletics takes the time to acknowledge; TCCC All-Conference winners, all graduating student-athlete’s and all TCCC All-Academic student-athlete’s.  In this first category, ENC recognized the seven TCCC winners this year, then honored twenty-one student-athletes who played every year while in attendance at ENC, and lastly recognized thirty-two student-athletes, one quarter of ENC’s student-athlete population, who achieved a 3.5 GPA or better.

A short highlight of the night revealed senior Jean Paul Marcellus (Men’s Basketball) earning the years best Male Single Game Performance with his 24 point, 10 rebound, 6 assist performance against Gordon College.  Marcellus was also voted Male Athlete of the Year Award as he earned TCCC All-Conference Honorable Mention while leading the league in rebounding, which was good enough for 18th in the nation.  Junior Danielle Koers (Women’s Soccer) did the same, winning the Female Single Game Performance of the Year, with her 5 goal, 1 assist game against Mitchell College, and then Female Athlete of the Year as she recorded 15 goals and 5 assists this year to make her women soccer’s single season highest point getter.

Winning ENC Athletics most esteemed awards were senior Faith Musembi (Women’s Soccer) and senior Jesse Mix (Men’s Soccer).  Musembi was voted Ms. Crusader due to her character and spirit both on and off the field.  Besides being a team leader, Musembi was highly involved on campus through the chaplain’s office; her participation in SGA sponsored events and the communication arts department productions.  Mix was voted Mr. Crusader as he was a three year captain for the Men’s Soccer team, spent two years as a resident assistant and was noted for his faith centered and action oriented living including his involvement in the campus community, Quincy community service programs and foreign missions projects.  For a complete listing of “ENCY” Award Winners, note the link labeled "ALL".

Experience for yourself only some of the night.  Opening Slide Show.  Meet the prestigious and humorous 2007-2008 Nominee's for Mr. and Ms. Crusader.
