WHAT? - An active week of drama, movement and musical theatre
culminating in original performance pieces created by YOU.

WHY?- To develop imagination, creativity
and skills in the performing arts

WHO?- Fourteen to seventeen year old students

HOW?- No auditions necessary • Limited enrollment

WHEN?- July 10-15, 2000 from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Our  UNIQUE approach to theatre training will provide you with an opportunity to explore and nurture your CREATIVE GIFTS.  The teachers will ENCOURAGEandCHALLENGEyou as you create original material and bring scenes to life!

You will study musical theatre, voice, improvisation, character development, scene analysis, playwriting, and movement.

We will also SEE A PLAY IN BOSTON!! Past shows have included Into the Woods, Beauty and the Beast and Romeo and Juliet. The play is included in the registration cost.

This EXCITING and INTENSIVE week of theatrical exploration will culminate with a free showcase of the your work for family and friends on Saturday, July 15 at 7:00 pm.

SUMMER YOUTH THEATRE will take place in the Cove Fine Arts Center at Eastern Nazarene College, 23 East Elm Avenue, Quincy, MA  02170.  Sessions begin at 9:00 a.m. and are scheduled throughout the day with a lunch break and several smaller breaks.  The Cove, home to both the Music and Communication Arts Departments of the college, features a 500-seat auditorium with state of the art lighting, classrooms, practice rooms, studios and faculty offices.

Eunice Ferreira, Director of Summer Youth Theatre
Ph.D. candidate, Tufts University
M.A. Theater, Emerson College

Eunice Ferreira is an Assistant Professor in the Communication Arts Department at Eastern Nazarene College where she has been teaching speech and drama for the past eight years.  Her experience includes acting, directing, playwrighting, teaching, and public speaking.  As an actor, she has performed in both plays and musical theatre.  Recent directing credits include Oliver!, Tartuffe and Marvin's Room.  Her original play Elvis, a Harley and a Nun was featured in the Emerson Playwright's Festival and also produced by ENC.  Other original works include Poetry in Motion, Off the Wall, and Soul Search. In addition to ENC, she has also been a drama instructor with the Cambridge Performance Project, an after-school drama program, and at Area 4, an inner-city youth center in both after-school and summer programs.   Her work with teenagers has lead to original shows performed by the young actors.
 
 
The Teachers

Misti Wills
M.A. Theater Education, Emerson College

Our two main teachers,  Misti Wills and Joy Whitbread met while they were graduate students at Emerson College and are excited to teach together in Summer Youth Theatre.  Misti Wills is a drama teacher at Westwood High School where she teaches and directs both plays and musicals.  Her graduate work in theatre education had a special focus on multicultural and bilingual theatre.  Her most recent plays include Our Town and Annie.  She also teaches public speaking and theatre for LEAD, the adult education program of Eastern Nazarene College.

Joy Whitbread
M.A. Theater Education, Emerson College

Joy Whitbread has taught middle school drama for the past two years and currently teaches at Thurston Middle School in Westwood.  Joy has a great love for creating original works with young actors and at Emerson Colelge she developed several pieces including Reflections, which explored the vopices of adolescent girls in contemporary America.  For the past five years she has served as theatre director for several summer theatre programs.   As the theatre director for Interlocken, Joy worked with high school students to create an original piece to tour New England summer camps.

The cost for the program is $200.Theatre masks
 

  • No audition or experience is necessary but enrollment is very limited - so apply early! 
  • Please call or write for an application form.  Complete and return the application form no later than June 30 with a $50.00 deposit.  Since enrollment is limited, you will be notified regarding acceptance into the program. 
  • A letter of acceptance will be sent to selected applicants along with additional information.  (Deposits will be returned to students if enrollment closes before they are granted a space.)
  • Early Registration Discount - Send in complete payment by June 25 and pay only $175.
  • Final Payment is due by July 7.
  • Make checks payable to ENC- Summer Youth Theatre.
** This is a day program. No housing is provided. **


The program cost for Summer Youth Theatre is $200.00 and must be paid in full by July 7.
In order to receive the early registration discount tuition, $175 must be received by June 25.
