“A
charming comedy of which the American theater can be proud.”
The stage is set for a few valuable lessons on life, love, and the true meaning of happiness when the youngest daughter Alice falls in love with Tony Kirby, the son of a rich and prominent Wall Street family. Worlds clash when the Kirbys meet the oddball members of the Sycamore household. Grandpa Vanderhof, the free-spirited patriarch, holds the family together with his own unique brand of wit, wisdom and faith. An array of activities reek havoc throughout the play including making illegal fireworks, operating a subversive printing press and surprise raids by the FBI and the IRS.
Many prominent American actors of the stage and screen, such as Jimmy Stewart, Jason Robards, and Colleen Dewhurst have starred in You Can’t Take It With You in Broadway revivals and in a 1938 Academy Award-winning film. The play best exemplifies the urbane wit that is the Hart-Kaufman trademark. Moss Hart and George Kaufman enjoyed tremendous success during the 1930s with such Broadway hits as The Man Who Came To Dinner, The American Way, and Once In A Lifetime. To honor the artistic contribution of Hart, each year the New England Theater Conference bestows the Moss Hart Memorial Award to members of the local theater community in recognition of theatrical excellence.
