The Mann Student Center’s Linda Whittling Lounge was full of excitement Feb. 23 as children from the ENC Germantown after-school program learned about caring for creatures, courtesy of ENC’s Animal Caretakers Team. For an hour, Assistant Professor of Biology Jonathan Twining and junior environmental science major Jennifer Kitchen displayed several animals to 25 Germantown students between the 3rd and 5th grades during their weekly visit to ENC. Spiders, snakes, amphibians and reptiles were featured, including Eragon the bearded dragon and Orion the jungle carpet python. The hour-long presentation centered on the animals’ characteristics, behaviors and ecosystems.“The kids really enjoyed the program,” said Katie Welch, a senior Youth Ministry major at ENC who leads the Germantown after-school program. “It’s so great for kids to have hands on experiences like this. Some even said it was the best animal show they have ever seen!”The Germantown program is a campus ministry that brings neighborhood children to the ENC campus once a week for music and art activities, as well as assistance with homework.
