John U. Free (Professor of Physics/ Engineering/ Computer Science)

Dr. Free has had considerable experience in the areas of teaching and research. He has been teaching at ENC since 1970, primarily in the Physics Department, and in 1978 he started the Computer Science Department at ENC. In 1975 he received a NSF (National Science Foundation) Faculty Research Fellowship. Dr. Free has twice been a visiting scholar at Harvard University, has been an associate of Harvard’s Physics Department since 1986, and has also taught several courses on Waves and Optics at Harvard. He has co-authored thirteen articles which have appeared in physics journals. He has also twice received the Outstanding Teacher Award at ENC. He lives with his wife in Boston, MA.

LeRoy P. Hammerstrom (Professor of Mathematics) Dept. Chair

 

Ph.D. in Mathematical Statistics, Northeastern University
M.S. University of Nebraska
B.A. Mid-America Nazarene College.

Dr. Hammerstrom has been teaching at ENC since 1980, and is currently serving as Chair of the Math/Computer Science Department. In 1990 he received the “Sears-Roebuck Foundation Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award”, the first to be awarded by the college. He is also a self-taught Macintosh computer programmer, and has primarily programmed software for use in the classroom, several programs of which have been copyrighted. He has contributed to three calculus study guides, and has written an essay on trigonometry for Magill’s Survey of Science. Other professional experience includes some statistical consulting. Dr. Hammerstrom notes that he is studying new ways to “bring math home for those students who need it the most.” He lives in Hingham, MA, with his wife and two sons.

Paul Nyce (Assistant Professor of Physics/Engineering/Mathematics/Computer Science)

 

M.S. in Computer Engineering, Boston University
B.S. in Physics, Eastern Nazarene College

Professor Nyce has been working at ENC since 1983. In the past he has held positions as the Systems Manager/Director of the Academic Computer Center and the Director of Information Technology, in addition to teaching courses in several departments. This year he will be teaching Physical Science, Astronomy, and Math Explorations courses. He has had several encyclopedia articles on computer topics published, as well as writing news pieces on scientific topics for Science & Spirit Magazine and book reviews and abstracts for Science & Theology News. Professor Nyce is an Oblate of St. Benedict and is affiliated with Our Lady of Glastonbury Abbey in Hingham. He considers himself a bibliophile and also loves foreign travel, especially on pilgrimage. He lives in Hingham, Mass. with his son.
