Webmail

WebMail is the web based email service that is part of mail@enc.edu, a suite of email services offered by the Information Technology Services (ITS) department. WebMail allows you to access your ENC email through the Internet. This means that you can read or send your email from school, home, or anywhere in the world that has an Internet connection. A web browser (such as Internet Explorer) is used instead of the standard desktop mail clients (such as Outlook). For those who are familiar with email services such as MSN Hotmail, the WebMail system operates in the same manner with respect to email functions. In order to use this service, an official ENC email address for each valid student, faculty, or staff has been created.

Why do I have an official ENC email address?

The College has established the policy that it will use email to send official communication to students. In order to correspond this way, a standard official “@enc.edu” email address will automatically be assigned when you become a student. It is to this @enc.edu address that official communication will be sent.
What is my official student email address?

Email addresses are generally of the form ‘firstname.middle-initial.lastname@enc.edu’. For example, Phineas F. Bresee would be phineas.f.bresee@enc.edu.

Can I change my ENC email address?

No. Each student is automatically assigned an official ENC email address of the form firstname.middle-initial.lastname@enc.edu. It needs to stay in this form to allow successful mass communication by administrators or faculty.

Can I have official College email sent to some other address?

A cautious “yes” is the answer. Official College email will always be sent to your ‘@enc.edu’ address. You do have, however, some flexibility as to where you handle your email. Many of you already have another email address that you wish to maintain. Should this be the case, you can forward your official email to this alternate address. This is often less efficient and more problematic than directly accessing the ENC server. You are responsible for maintaining forwarding, which can be done at http://nsa.enc.edu/.

How do I access my official student email account?

You first need your Network Services Account (NSA) information. This Username and initial Password are automatically generated and were distributed to you when you enrolled as a student at ENC. The NSA Username usually has the format: ‘last name up to seven characters’ + “first initial”. It is this Username and Password that are used to log into ENC WebMail, the preferred method for accessing your email. If you did not receive your NSA information or forgot it, please contact the ITS help desk. You can change your NSA password at http://nsa.enc.edu/.

OK, NOW how do I access my official student email?

To access ENC WebMail go to http://webmail.enc.edu using a standard up-to-date web browser such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla. Enter your Username and Password in the appropriate spaces, and then click on the “Log in” button. Make sure you log out of WebMail once you are done!

Is there a disk quota on my email account?

Yes. Each email account is allocated 10 MB of disk space. The sum total of space occupied by the messages is what matters, not the number of emails in your Inbox. Thus, a small number of emails with very large attachments could cause your disk quota to max out quickly.

How do I know I am over quota?

WebMail will notify you when you reach 90% of quota. In some cases, an email will be sent to you alerting you that you have exceeded your quota. You must delete messages to free up space. It is your responsibility to keep your account clean, that is, remove messages in a timely fashion so that your mailbox does not fill up. If you are not proactive in maintaining your account and you exceed your disk quota you will run the risk of not receiving any email.

What about attachments?

You can send and receive attachments. Of course, you must have a compatible applications installed on the computer you are using in order to open and manipulate the attached files.

Is there a maximum size for attachments?

Yes. You will not be able to receive an attachment that exceeds your disk quota or will cause you to exceed your disk quota. When you delete messages to free up disk space choose those messages with large attachments. If you need to keep the attachment, save it to your local hard drive, and then delete the email. Additionally, you cannot send an attachment through WebMail over 4 MB, regardless of your quota percentage.

How long can I keep my official student email account?

As long as you are an ENC student, you will be able to access your official email account.

Are there rules to abide by?

Yes. These are the same rules embodied in the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) that is included in the Student Handbook. Use of the web based email system, or any College-provided IT services and infrastructure means that you agree to abide by the AUP and other applicable College policies. You can read the AUP at the ITS website (http://www.enc.edu/its).

Can I read my email in another way (IMAP or POP)?
Yes, you can. Please contact ITS Help Desk for instructions.

Who do I call if I have a problem?

Follow the links on the WebMail login page to the available on-line help documentation. If you still experience problems, document what you are doing and either call the ITS department HelpDesk at x3727, email us at its-help@enc.edu, or drop by the office (normal hours are Monday through Friday 8 AM to 5 PM). Also, check the ITS website [http://www.enc.edu/its] or the WebMail login page [http://webmail.enc.edu] for announcements of known problems or scheduled downtimes.
