  How do I uninstall ResNet?
You should read this if:

You will no longer be connecting to ResNet (you won't be returning to ENC in the fall, etc.) and you'd like to make your computer work the way that it did before it was set up for ResNet.

Note:  If you're NOT running Windows then you're all set!

Why should I do this?

  • The ENC-mandated antivirus package will stop working within 3 months!  (as a part of our contract with the anti-virus software provider, Sophos, we can only provide virus database updates to current members of  the college community).   You are strongly advised to always have running an up-to-date antivirus software package!
  • The ENC logon script that runs each time your start Windows is no longer necessary and ideally should be disabled.

The procedure:

A. Disable the ResNet login script

  1. Click here, to download a small cleanup program.  (Please remember:  you should always be very careful about running downloaded programs.  NEVER run programs that have been sent to you via email!!)
    • If you're using Internet Explorer then you'll be presented with a pop-up window that offers you choices that include "Open" and "Save".  Click "Open".
    • With other  browsers you may be given only the option of saving the file.  Save the file to a convenient location (like your "desktop" or "C:\").   After the file is saved, double-click on it and it will run.
  2. When the program runs a window will appear with some text in it.  Give it a quick read and then hit any key to continue.  That's it!

B. Keep my computer safe from viruses!

1. Buy an antivirus software package.  We recommend that you select an option that includes a "firewall".  Here are some viable choices:

2. Uninstall Sophos Anti-Virus

  • Click the Windows "Start" button and select "Control Panel" (for users of Windows 95/98/Me, look under "Settings").  From the Control Panel window, double-click on "Add or Remove Programs".
  • A list of installed programs will appear.  From this list select "Sophos Anti-Virus".  Click the button labeled "Change/Remove" (with Windows 95/98/Me it is labeled "Add/Remove").  An uninstall wizard will appear.   Follow its prompts to complete the uninstall process.

3. Install the new antivirus software package that you purchased.

4. Highly recommended:   keep current your antivirus package update subscription!  If you don't your computer will soon become vulnerable to newly emerging threats.

C. Optional but strongly recommended!

1. Run Windows Update regularly and install all critical updates.

2. Keep your computer running smoothly by eliminating SpyWare.   We highly recommend Spybot-Search & Destroy as your first line of defense against this threat.
