NEW!!! SPAM-FILTERING SERVICE!!
ENC is rolling out
a new spam-filtering service! In a few days you
will notice messages in your Inbox with the tag
****ENC SPAM**** in the subject
line. These messages have been marked by ENC's
email system as spam, and you can safely delete
them. To save time however, you can configure
your email client to delete them automatically
or place them in a "quarantine" folder for later
inspection. ENC's two supported email clients
are Thunderbird
(for internal users only) and WebMail.
Here's how to set them up for spam filtering:
Thunderbird:
- In the Menu bar, click
Tools->Message Filters
- In the Message
Filters window, be sure that your
ENC mail account is selected in the "Filters
for" box
- Click New
to create a new filter rule
- Give the filter a name,
such as "Spam Filter"
- In the the empty box
next to the boxes labeled Subject
and Contains, enter the spam
text string ****ENC SPAM****
- Under Perform
these actions click the first option
- "Move to Folder", then select the Trash
folder from the drop-down list. You can also
select a different folder (or create a new
one) to use a quarantine instead.
Webmail:
- In the Menu bar, click Options
- Under Mail Management click
Filters
- Under Rule Definition create
a new filter rule:
- Click the "Subject" box, type ****ENC
SPAM**** in the text box
- Select whether to delete the message
or move it to another folder
- Finally, click Create
to create the rule. From now on, every
time you log into WebMail your spam will
be filtered!
Spam:
Spam is unsolicited
"junk" e-mail sent to large numbers
of people to promote products or services.
As e-mail costs close to nothing to
send, companies have been taking this approach
to send as much as they can to as many people
as they can find.
Tips
to Help Reduce Spam
Don't
post your e-mail address online, use a separate
email address.
Do not supply your ENC
email address on any website. The use of your
ENC email account should be college related.
Spammer software scans newsgroups, web sites,
and web forums looking for e-mail addresses.
If you post in such places, disguise your e-mail
address, never use your personal email address.
Create a new email address for this purpose.
This way you can quickly go through the email
in this account to filter out spam and your
main personal email address won't be as clogged
with spam. You can create free email accounts
at Yahoo or Hotmail.
Don’t
give out your e-mail address unless you know
how it will be used.
Read the site’s
privacy policy to learn about the company and
how they use the information they gather from
you. If they don’t have a privacy statement,
you probably shouldn’t trust them with
your address.
Never
buy anything advertised in spam.
Don't visit their sites
or ask for more information. Remember, if you
respond to their spam, you're encouraging them
to continue spamming. Even if you happen to
be looking for a lower mortgage rate, don’t
look for it in junk e-mail. Chances are the
services advertised are bogus anyway. Respected
loan companies don’t randomly flood inboxes.
There is another reason not to buy anything
from a company that spam: over 95% of spam offers
are scams! In fact, not responding to spam is
the single most effective way to not get scammed
on the Internet.
Do not reply to Spam
This just confirms to the Spammer
that they found a legitimate email address.
Update your address book.
Make sure that the people you want to have contact
with are in your address book: your friends,
family, business associates, and companies you’ve
requested e-mail from. Most e-mail systems have
a filter, so messages may not be delivered into
a recipient's inbox unless the sender's e-mail
address is included in their address book.
Resist
the temptation to unsubscribe.
Sometimes clicking a link that promises to unsubscribe
you lets the spammer know that your e-mail address
is valid, which means you might be spammed even
more.
Remove your email address from your
website.
If you have a website, and have your email address
listed or linked, you can expect to be spammed.
Powerful address-harvesting robots will spider
your site and extract them. So remove them wherever
possible and use web-based forms instead. This
will drastically cut down the amount of spam
you receive if you have a website.
Never
forward chain e-mails.
Do not send or forward chain letters. E-mails
that claims that they generate revenue for a
certain cause are capable of tracking the e-mail
addresses. These e-mails are commonly referred
to as a chain mail and are commonly false and
help individuals get additional e-mail address
for spam.
Filter your email
Most of the email programs have a filter which
could be the key to managing your email effectively.
It may take a short time to figure out how to
do this, but it's definitely worthwhile. Consider
acquiring multiple email addresses for different
purposes. This helps you to identify different
sources and senders, and lets you filter more
effectively.
