ENC
is pleased to announce secure wireless network
access for campus community members. The following
is a general overview of ENC's wireless
network, including some background information, an
overview of the process to connect, and some
troubleshooting tips.
How does ENC's
wireless network work?
ENC is implementing
cutting edge wireless technology to make the
wireless network safe and secure. Because
this technology is relatively new, Windows
operating systems do not handle it well on their
own. To make the connection process easier
for you, we are making available a wireless
supplicant software called Odyssey. When
you first connect to our "ENC - Register for
Access" network, you will be redirected to our
captive portal, where you can log in and
download this software. The Odyssey client
does the rest, authenticating you to our network
and handling all communication between your
computer and the wireless network. That's
it in a nut shell. You can find more
detailed information below.
Where is wireless available?
Wireless connectivity is
currently available in all campus buildings on
both the main campus and the Old Colony campus.
The wireless network is also available in a few
outdoor areas, including the lawn in front of
Gardner Hall, and the picnic table area outside
of the Mann Student Center.
Does this mean I won't need to plug my computer
into the network in my dorm room?
While you should be able to connect wirelessly
in your dorm room, we strongly recommend that
you still connect to the wired network if
possible. The wireless network is for
convenience and portability, but it is not a
replacement for the wired network. The
wired network will still be more reliable and
faster.
What do I need to connect to
ENC's wireless network?
1. A computer running
a current Operating System (Windows XP, Mac OSX) with the latest updates.
2. A wireless network adapter capable of
handling 802.1x authentication. You will
also most likely need the most up to date
version of your wireless adapter's driver.
3. An ENC Network Services Account (NSA).
The wireless network is restricted to authorized
ENC community members, and does require that you
login using your NSA username and password.
How do I connect?
For Windows users, the first
time you connect to ENC's wireless network, you
will need to go through the following steps:
-
When you are in range of the wireless network,
you can use Windows to display available
wireless networks. If you are within range of
the wireless signal, you will see a network
called “ENC – Register for Access”.
Connect to this network.
-
Next, open up your preferred web browser. You
should be automatically directed to ENC’s
registration page,
http://netreg.enc.edu, where you will be
asked for a username and password. Here you
will use your NSA account information (same as
your ENC e-mail).
-
Once you have logged in, you will have access to
a link to download the ‘Odyssey’ application
from Juniper Networks. This application will
then handle all necessary configuration and
allow you to connect to ENC’s wireless network.
-
Once this application is installed and running,
check the “Connect to Network” box to connect to
ENC’s wireless network. You will be asked
to login, and you should be all set!
The next time you want to connect to the wireless
network, you should just need to start Odyssey and
click connect.
Macintosh users should follow steps 1 and 2 above,
and will then get detailed instructions for
connecting from the netreg.enc.edu site.
Do I have to
install the Odyssey client?
We have made the Odyssey client available to make
it easier for you to connect to our wireless
network. However, if you have some other
compatible wireless utility on your computer and
don't want to use Odyssey, you may do so.
Please note, however, that ITS can only support
those users using the Odyssey client. If you
opt not to use this tool, responsibility for
support falls on yourself.
I can't get
connected. What else can I try?
If you have gone through the
steps above and still cannot connect to the
wireless network, there are a few other things
you can try:
-
Reboot your computer. If you have just
installed Odyssey for the first time, or if your
computer has gone into hibernation mode, you may
need to reboot in order to connect.
-
Make sure you have the most recent version of
your wireless network adapter driver.
Because we are using new technology, drivers
that are outdated will not work.
If you are still encountering problems,
please visit the ITS helpdesk Monday through
Friday, 8am-5pm for help.

Having Trouble Connecting to the Wireless Network?
We've noticed many people
having trouble because they do not have an
up-to-date driver for their wireless network card.
To learn how to find an up-to-driver for your
card, follow these steps:
-
Find out the manufacturer of your wireless
adapter. If you don't know, right click on
My Computer, then select properties. Go to
the hardware tab, and select "Device Manager".
Your adapter should be listed under adapters.
-
Go
to the manufacturers web site.
-
Search for drivers for your particular adapter.
Drivers are often found under the support
section of a web site.
-
Once you find the most recent driver, download
it to your computer and run it.
-
Now try to connect to the wireless network
again. You may need to reboot first.
