ENC History Department Plagiarism Policy

Plagiarism is a serious matter, and it will not be tolerated in the History Department of Eastern Nazarene College. Students submitting plagiarized work will receive an automatic grade of zero on the assignment and—depending upon the circumstance—risk receiving a failing grade in the course. Less obvious and more innocent cases will also be penalized.

Keep the following in mind (adapted from the American Psychological Association): Quotation marks and a footnote should be used to indicate the exact words of another. Summarizing a passage or rearranging the order of a sentence or changing some of the words is paraphrasing. Each time a source is paraphrased, a footnote is needed. The principle to keep in mind here is “that an author does not present the work of another as if it were his or her own.” This applies to ideas as well as specific words.
