John
Polkinghorne
Reverend Dr.
John Polkinghorne, former Professor of Mathematical Physics at Cambridge,
is an ordained Anglican Priest, as well as the President of Queens’ College,
Cambridge University. The author of many important books on the compatibility
of religion and science, including Science and Creation and Science
and Providence, Polkinghorne was the recipient of the Templeton
Prize in 2002, which recognizes his achievements in discovering or researching
the existence of spiritual realities. His Gifford Lectures, entitled The
Faith of a Physicist: Reflections of a Bottom-up Thinker, were published
in 1993, and are considered a classic of science and religion scholarship.
Polkinghorne will be arguing at the Open Theology Seminar that dominant
scientific theories fit well with the notion that God is open, relational,
and self-giving.
