The Cameron Center

Cameron CenterAfter residing in Canterbury Hall for two decades, the History Department moved to the first floor of 162 Old Colony Avenue in the summer of 2004.  (Maps & Directions.)  The site was once part of the old Howard Johnson Candy Factory located about ¾ mile from the main campus.  A number of converging factors prompted the move.  The hiring of Randall Stephens served as the immediate catalyst.  If the History Department had stayed in Canterbury Hall, it was quite possible that the faculty offices would be on four separate floors.  Such fragmentation ran counter to the new departmental identity forged by the arrival of Carla Lovett.  At the same time, as a result of ENC’s expanding enrollment, classrooms and office space at the Old Colony Campus are now utilized in the daytime by ENC Students.  “We are excited about our new offices,” stated departmental chair Donald Yerxa.  “They are beautiful – brick walls, many windows, and ample square footage.  More importantly, with our faculty all in place, we can build on the momentum of the last year and continue to create a strong departmental identity.”

CameronENC President David McClung, Academic Dean Richard Stephens, and History Department chair Donald Yerxa announced in the summer 2004 that the history offices at the Old Colony Campus and the adjacent ENC archives were named “The James R. Cameron Center for History, Law, and Government” in honor of Professor Cameron’s lifetime service to ENC.  Yerxa launched a campaign in the fall to raise money in order to outfit the Cameron Center.  “We want every student, prospective student, and alumnus who walks through the doors of our building to know that the tradition of excellence, the hallmark of ENC’s History Department and Pre-Law focus, is attributed to Jim Cameron’s faithful service to ENC and our Lord.”
