College Achievement Program (CAP)
The Center is responsible for the administration of the College Achievement Program (CAP) which assists first year students in developing English and mathematics skills to a level appropriate for functioning in the college environment. Students accepted to ENC under the provisions of the CAP are tested for levels of proficiency in English and mathematics, and then placed in appropriate classes in their first year to develop these skills. Students in the CAP will be enrolled in the First Year Seminar course and based on placement testing will take one or more of the following courses:

  • Writing for College
  • Reading for College
  • Fundamentals of Math
  • Math for College
First Year Seminar
The transition from high school to college is a difficult one. The First Year Seminar course, offered to students in the fall of each year, is intended to help develop an understanding of college-level expectations, personal independence, and the Christian worldview. In addition, the course seeks to invest in the student an appreciation for academic skills such as time management, test-taking, and career management, that give the first year student an advantage among his or her peers. Students involved in the CAP often choose this course for its skills-development advantages. All first year students are encouraged to register for the course.

Supplemental Instruction
For many of the first and second year core courses, the Center provides supplemental instruction (SI) reinforcement to students. Under this program, upperdivision honors students are hired to confer with the instructor on course material, attend the class sessions, and then offer to students in the class additional evening opportunities to review the lecture material, ask additional questions, and prepare for tests. Statistically, we find that students who attend SI on a regular basis (at least once a week) average one letter grade higher than their peers who do not choose to attend. Courses for which SI sessions are offered are as follows:
  • Western Heritage
  • Philosophical Quest
  • Biblical History and Literature
  • Introduction to Psychology
  • Arts and Music

Writing Lab - Paper Editing/ Drop In Tutoring
The Center offices, located on the third floor of Gardner Hall on the main campus, are open for drop-in tutoring most afternoon and evening hours. The Center is staffed with honors-level peer tutors, referred to as learning assistants, who are trained to assist students with general academic skills, editing of papers, general mathematics skills, test preparation and study skills, and computer access. These services are heavily used. The Center is also an excellent place to find quiet study space. Hours of operation are posted each semester. No appointment is necessary, but students are able to sign up in advance to work with a particular learning assistant.

One-to-One Peer Tutoring
Students desiring specific academic assistance in a particular subject may request a peer tutor who will agree to meet the student on a regular basis. There is a small cost of $5.00 per hour to the student for this service, which must be paid in advance to the Cashier for a minimum of five sessions. The Center maintains a list of trained tutors, matches tutor to tutee, subsidizes the cost of the tutor and oversees the completion of the arrangement. Students interested in arranging for a tutor should go to the Center and file a request form.

Private Tutoring for Surrounding Communities
The tutor bank is also available to those in communities near the ENC campus. Parents and students can request a tutor to work with them in a variety of subjects. The cost for this service is $15.00 an hour which is paid directly to the student tutor. There is an additional $15.00 fee for administrative purposes, which is paid at the first session. If you would like to request a tutor, please contact the Center by phone at (617) 745-3838 or by e-mail at cas@enc.edu. Please include your name, grade level of the tutee, subject to be tutored, and contact information.

Group Study Sessions
For classes where there are a minimum of four students needing similar study assistance, the Center will arrange for the development of a small study group session, select a tutor and form the group at no cost to the interested students. A group of students wishing to form a study group should drop by the Center offices and file a request to form a study group.

Testing Services
The Center accommodates certified physical or learning disabled students who require quiet space, an untimed environment or a physical accommodation. Students in every case must work with the specific course instructor to set up these testing situations.

Learning Disabilities Accommodation
The Center holds the responsibility for maintaining certification files, providing academic support and intervention for students who have specific physical or learning disabilities. In order for the Center to be fully effective, students must take the initiative in providing medical certification to the director. A specific explanation of these services is available from the director of the Center.

Academic Advising
The professional staff in the Center are available to provide academic counseling to students who may need additional guidance to maintain satisfactory progress in their coursework. Students will be encouraged to develop a structured plan to meet their educational objectives and then to utilize the Center and other resources to help reach these goals. Students interested in receiving academic counseling should schedule an appointment with the Center's director by calling (617) 745-3837 or by e-mail to cas@enc.edu.
