Keeping and Serving God's Creation ... Genesis 2:15

Earth Day 2006: Caring for Creation at Wessagusett Park in Weymouth, MA

On Saturday morning, April 8, 16 students from the Beta Phi Mu Shrader Club and the Students for Social Justice joined professors Jonathan Twining and Stacey Barker for a cleanup at Wessagusett Park in Weymouth, MA.  The cleanup was conducted on behalf of the Fore River Watershed Association (FRWA).  Working for about two hours, the students and professors removed about 20-25 bags of trash, as well as sinks,  tires, scrap metal, old tarps, bed springs, and many other items dumped there over the years.  Volunteers from the FRWA provided a tractor that was very helpful in removing the larger items until bad luck struck and the tractor blew a tire.

"Thank you so much for the work done by you and your crew.  It was awesome!", said FRWA Executive Director Jodi Purdy-Quinlan.  "The work  accomplished by your group was excellent and I can't thank you enough."

Professor Twining wants to continue having his biology students work with FRWA to clean up this property, remove invasive species, and help restore the natural vegetation to the property.  Eventually, he would like the students to develop a self-guided tour for the site, complete with a brochure that will help educate the public about ecology and environmental issues.

"We have an opportunity to help the FRWA turn this into a place where people can come to enjoy God's creation in the midst of suburbia."

Thanks to all of the students who braved the cold, wet, and windy conditions to participate in this event.
