Keeping and Serving God's Creation ... Genesis 2:15

What Is Creation Care?

Creation care is another name for what most people call environmental stewardship.  We call it "creation care" because we acknowledge that the earth was made through a divine Creator who gave us the responsibility to care for his creation (Genesis 2:15).  Because God made the earth, it belongs to him (Psalm 24:1), and as such, we are stewards of God's property.  Therefore, we cannot treat the earth as we please, but must care for the earth as much as its owner does.  God treats his creation with love and compassion (Psalm 145:9), caring for both man and beast (Psalm 36:6-7).  He provides for the needs of all living creatures.  Since God's dominion of the earth is loving and compassionate, ours should be too.  But instead, we tend to try to dominate creation by subjecting it to our will.

God made the earth to be fruitful, and to give glory to him as its Creator (Romans 1:20).  When our actions destroy the earth and its creatures, it is not longer fruitful and gives evidence of our sin (Hosea 4:1-3 and Jeremiah 9).   But God loves his creation so much that he sent his son to die on a cross to redeem the creation (John 3:16, Colossians 1:20).  To redeem means "to reverse the effects of sin upon".
