What is The Bible Women’s Project?
The Bible Women’s
Project is a theatrical piece telling the true stories of several young Christian women as they intersect with stories of women in the Bible. Beginning in November 2011, women were invited by Tara Brooke Watkins, ENC theatre producer and director, to participate in story circles, a process developed by
theatre artists during the Civil Rights Movement to create dialogue around difficult topics. In 2014, fifteen women devoted their fall semester to meeting each week for story circle and theatre development work aimed at understanding the stories of the women in the Bible. Each woman brought in a woman’s story which
she read directly from scripture. She then asked all the women in the circle to put herself in the Bible woman’s shoes and asked a question about that woman’s experience. To that question, each woman wrote an answer. The original woman then followed up by asking a question about the participants’ lives as it
related in her own mind to the story from the Bible. Watkins then responded with theatrical exercises, scene development prompts, and movement work. All of this material was then woven together by Watkins into a script.
The play premiered in February 2015 and immediately, the response was overwhelmingly supportive and full of gratitude. Large numbers of audience members stayed for talkbacks after every performance and expressed the ways the play reflected their own lives. People shared stories, asked their own
questions, and thanked the cast for being brave enough to tackle “taboo” subjects in such a respectful and provocative manner. The most oft-heard comment though, was “Please tell me this one weekend is not the only time you will do this show.” In response to so many people asking to have the show
performed again, the cast extended their run, revived it the following September and launched a tour at Bethel AME church in Boston June 2016. Now, they will perform at the prestigious NYC International Fringe Festival.
