Eastern Nazarene peppers TCCC All-Conference Honorable Mention Team Quincy, Mass. - May 1, 2009 - The Commonwealth Coast Conference announced today the TCCC All-Conference teams, of which Eastern Nazarene popped two first year players, Victor Torres (Bronx, NY) and Stephen Oehlschlaeger (Dallas, TX) on board due to outstanding seasons at the plate and on the mound.
Torres finished an outstanding first season with a .383 batting average, .481 on-base percentage, and 36 stolen bases. Coach Kutt commented, "Like many great leadoff hitters, Victor was the catalyst of the Crusader offense and consistently on base. He often got things rolling with a hit, walk, stolen base, and run scored. On defense he earned the nickname the “Falcon” because he seems to fly to the ball in centerfield and make great catches look routine."
Over the course of the entire season, Steve compiled a 4-3 record and 2.42 ERA, while pitching 48.1 innings, giving up 43 hits, 13 earned runs and striking out 70 batters. He threw games striking out 12 and 15 batters, and allowed just three, five and six hits (three times) with over 6 innings pitched in five different games.
Coach Kutt chimed in saying, "Both Steve and Victor had outstanding seasons. With the many talented ballplayers in the TCCC, being recognized as first year players in our conference is a step in the right direction for our baseball program. Now we hope to build on their accomplishments and take our baseball program to a higher level next season."
Eastern Nazarene swept by Colby-Sawyer in TCCC Finale NEW LONDON, N.H. - April 25, 2009 - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team swept the Crusaders of Eastern Nazarene in the team's final TCCC regular season doubleheader. The Crusaders answered with three runs over the next two innings to take a 7-3 lead and then scored five in the top of the seventh to increase their lead to 12-5. However, the Chargers made a miraculous comeback in the bottom of the seventh, scoring eight runs to earn the walk off victory. Game two started with the Crusaders jumping on the Chargers' pitching staff early. Eastern Nazarene scored all four of their runs in the first two frames, but the Chargers regained the lead in the bottom half of the second. Cunningham hit his second home run of the day in the fifth, with one, as he hung a fly ball high into right field where the light wind to carried it the rest of the way out of the park to draw the visitors to within three, 8-5. The Leopards completed the comeback in the sixth as they took advantage of two Crusader errors, a called fielder interference and a dropped infield pop up, coupled with two Wentworth hits to collect three runs and tie the game at 8-8. It was not long before the Leopards went ahead as Anthony Carbone led off with a single and advanced to second on a ground out. After the second out, Pete Oggeri’s hard hit to left field was dropped and Carbone scored to give the Leopards their first lead of the game, 9-8. A run scoring error and a RBI single by Kevin McKenzie gave the Leopards what appeared to be the winning runs. In the bottom of the seventh, with one out and hope running out, the Crusaders speedy Jimmy Williams (Truckee, CA) got on from a throwing error to first. Victor Torres then walked on and freshman Jeffrey Hostos (Bronx, NY) doubled off the center field fence to score Williams and give the home team reason for belief.
