Over the years, hundreds of singers have experienced the joy of performing with ENC’s A Cappella Choir. Whether it was with director Esther Williamson, Dr. Paul Wilwerth, Lambert Brandes, Greg Larkin, Robert Howard, Dr. Susan Armstrong, or Dr. Tim Shetler, the ministry of the choir has impacted the lives of audiences and members alike. With the retirement of Dr. Brady Millican and Professor Lambert Brandes and the hiring of Dr. Kevin Smith, a 1994 alum of the program, as department chair, the ENC Music Department is in a time of transition. One of the major commitments of the department is to reconnect with our alumni, both former majors and former ensemble members. It is vital to the life of the department that our current students, our campus community, and the community at large see the impact that ENC ensembles have had over many decades and in the lives of hundreds of participants. Someone once said that “the arts are the drippings of God’s grace.” This is what groups like the A Cappella Choir have been to so many.
To this same end, the music department is recreating the A Cappella Alumni Choir, under the direction of Dr. Kevin Smith. The first performance will be a joint concert with the current A Cappella Choir on May 3, 2015. A core group of local alumni will be performing a few pieces and a larger group of alumni from around the country have been invited back for a rehearsal and to participate on several combined pieces with the current choir students. The goal of the Alumni Choir is to provide local alumni an opportunity to continue to sing after college, at whatever stage of life they are in. The local core group will be an active performing ensemble, but the department will continue to provide opportunities for alumni at large, through satellite rehearsals and alumni choir weekends, to return and join the core ensemble for periodic performances.
