Administration

The Administration Certification Program and the Master of Education in Program Development and Supervision prepare educators for administrative and supervisory positions in the following areas:

• elementary principal
• middle school principal
• secondary principal
• supervisor/director
• special education administrator

Students in this innovative program investigate major current educational issues in experiential courses. The certification programs are designed in a two year sequence for completion and certification. In order to satisfy requirements for the master's degree, students will complete the initial license core, the courses in the specific area of concentration, and a clinical internship for a total of 36 credit hours.

Early Childhood Education

Courses in the Master of Education and Certification programs in Early Childhood Education blend theory with experience. Emphasis is placed on the following areas:

• understanding the child's developmental processes,
• structuring environments which facilitate growth of a child's cognitive, social, and motor skills, and
• acquiring certain teaching skills which foster growth and creativity.

Upon successful completion of the program, the student is eligible for certification as an early childhood teacher in preschool through grade three.

Instructional Technology

The Master of Education in Instructional Technology program prepares the student for initial and professional license as an Instructional Technology Specialist at all teaching levels. Students will participate in application courses that will provide experience with hardware and software, applications of technology in K-12 curriculum and instruction, a preparation for technology leadership and management roles, problem solving technologies for exceptional students and an introduction to new and emerging technologies in the educational workplace. The Statistics and Research Design, Research in Education and Clinical Internship components of the program will provide and opportunity for the student to identify, research and solve a specific technology problem in the workplace.

Elementary Education

The Master of Education and Certification programs in Elementary Education provide students with experiential models for the design of instruction and for maximizing learner involvement. Emphasis is placed on understanding the child, the process of learning, and critical thinking. Students in the elementary education program are actively engaged in developing skills, materials for teaching, and their own creative abilities. Upon successful completion of the program, the student is eligible for certification as an elementary teacher in grades one through six.

Middle School Education

The uniqueness of the middle school philosophy includes approaches such as team-teaching and exploratory programs designed to better meet the needs of the emerging adolescent. The program offers the person with a bachelor's degree the opportunity to become certified as a classroom teacher while also providing the currently certified teacher the opportunity to further develop professional skills in the middle school area. Each student may select to have the emphasis for the degree or certification in either the generic area of middle school or in the designated subject area. Students who have not completed their bachelor's degree at an institution with an Interstate Certification Compact approved program in their major must complete a comparability process. This process will be explained by the program coordinator/advisor.

Secondary Education

The Master of Education and Certification programs in Secondary Education are designed for both the beginning and the experienced teacher. First of all, the teacher who is currently certified is able to expand his or her knowledge base and to further develop professional skills as they relate to teaching the high school student. Secondly, the programs offer the person with a bachelor's degree in an academic area the opportunity to become certified as a classroom teacher. This is particularly helpful to those who desire to enter the teaching profession for the first time after some experience within the area of baccalaureate preparation. Students who have not completed their bachelor's degree at an institution with an Interstate Certification Compact approved program must complete a comparability process. This process will be explained by the program coordinator/advisor.

Special Needs

Schools are seeking innovative ways to meet the needs of students at all levels. The Master of Education and Certification programs in Special Needs focus on the following areas:

• assessing the abilities of the special needs student,
• developing and implementing individualized educational plans,
• providing services for the special needs student, and
• creating other teaching-learning strategies to meet the student's special needs.

The counseling of parents and professional team members is also emphasized. Students have the option of seeking certification for either the level of Pre-K through 9 or 5 through 12 grades. The courses, practicum, and clinical internship must all be on the same grade level.

Teacher of Reading

The Master of Education in Reading program consists of courses and related practicum experiences designed to help classroom teachers and resource room teachers increase their knowledge and develop competencies necessary to function as a teacher of reading. Upon completion of the program, the student will be eligible for Massachusetts certification for the Teacher of Reading.

Program Development (Non-certification)

This non-certification program offers flexibility and is designed to enhance creativity and innovativeness for the professional educator who seeks a degree tailored to meet his or her professional needs. Students in the Master of Education in Program Development plan an individually designed course of study and investigate major educational issues in experiential courses. Students organize and create curricula, examine the latest research in education, such as brain laterality and learning styles, and apply this new knowledge to their own teaching.
