Overview | Initial Licensure | Professional License | Programs | Courses | Practicum
The education faculty believe the teaching practicum plays an important role in blending theory learned in the graduate classroom with hands-on training. For this reason, a minimum student teaching experience of six weeks is required of all students. A minimum of 25 clock hours of time will be spent for each week of student teaching credit.
Observation of teachers and pupils at work and in participation in teacher activities with conferences and reports are emphasized. This practice teaching is done under supervision in public schools of the greater Boston area and the South Shore.
A weekly seminar (ED549z) will be required for all those who are registering for their first student teaching practicum/internship. This seminar will address issues which arise out of the practicum experience. Resource persons will be used to address specific topics.
Admission to the Student Teaching Practicum
Application for the student teaching practicum must be made in consultation with the Director of Teacher Placement. Only students who have satisfactorily completed the professional sequence and have maintained good standing in the graduate education program will be considered for student teaching. Additional coursework may be required, depending on the need of the individual student. Prerequisites for admission to student teaching are as follows:
1. Admission to and in good standing in the graduate education program.
2. Satisfactory completion of required courses.
3. Approval of the Director of Teacher Placement.
4. A 3.0 quality point average.
Note: All students entering the teacher education program must complete the Communication and Literacy Skills component of the Massachusetts Educator Certification Test by the time they have completed three graduate education courses.
Teacher Placement
The Brickley Center, offering counseling and career services to ENC students and alumni/ae, is a resource available in securing positions for which graduates are best suited and qualified. Students in teacher certification programs should file credentials with the Education Division during their student teaching experience. Credentials are established for each applicant. Included in the credential file are recommendations of the college faculty and the cooperating teacher and principal. Credentials are provided to prospective employers on request.
