Q: When do I get my student identification card?
A: You should receive your student ID cards in the library session of your first course. These are not picture ID cards; they are used for library services only. You can choose to buy a picture ID, which would give you access to the exterior door of the library and to the gym. Contact Security/Risk Management at 617-745-3728, if you are interested in buying a picture ID card.
Q: What happens when classes are cancelled?
A: Due to the accelerated nature of our program, classes are postponed rather than cancelled. Classes will generally be made up the Friday after the missed class, unless otherwise informed by the professor or Class Representative. In case of a weather situation, the ENC Adult and Graduate Studies office will notify WBZ radio (1030 AM) and television (Channel 4). You may also check our Web site on the homepage or you may call 617-774-6800.
Q: What are the responsibilities of the Class Representative?
A: The Class Representative acts as the liaison between the ENC Adult and Graduate Studies Administration and the class members. The class representative will develop and coordinate the use of an e-mail distribution listing or a phone calling chain to inform students of important information (including emergency class cancellation). This person will also be responsible for collecting and returning end-of-course evaluations to the Adult and Graduate Studies office and ensuring that the classroom is in satisfactory condition at the end of each class meeting.
Q: Why do I need to fill out Health Insurance forms?
A: The state of Massachusetts requires all full-time students to provide proof of health insurance. If you do not have health insurance, you may purchase it from the school. Click here for more information & forms.
Q: How do I register for my courses?
A: Once you have been accepted into the program, you will be registered for all the courses in the Core Program. The class calendar lists all of these courses. Please note: you are NOT registered for any course that was waived through transfer credit. The admission letter and Degree Requirements Evaluation Form (DREF) give more information on waiver periods (if applicable). You are also NOT registered for anything outside of your Core Program that you may need.
Q: How do I withdraw from a course?
A: If you are unable to attend a course, you will need to call your Academic Advisor or complete a Change of Student Status Form to withdraw. Change of Student Status Forms are available in the first floor hallway of the Adult & Graduate Studies offices. They can also be mailed to students on request and are available online.
If you know in advance that you will not be able to attend class, we ask that you withdraw three weeks before the start of the class. This ensures that your name will not be on the attendance roster. You should not be charged for the course, and resource materials should not be sent to you.
If you have attended a course, but decide to withdraw for any reason, you will be charged for the nights you have attended. The nights are prorated, and students are charged according to the Refund Policy. If you attended 50% or more of the course, you will be charged the entire cost of the course. You will also be responsible to pay for the Educational Resource Fee, as used books are not refundable.
Q: How do I special register for a course that I missed in my calendar or that I need to complete my degree requirements?
A: The schedule of courses being offered is available online. Once you decide which course(s) you would like to register for, you should contact your Academic Advisor. The Academic Advisor will be able to give you instructions as to what needs to be done to complete the registration process. Single Course Registration Forms are sometimes required and are available at the Adult & Graduate Studies office or can be filled out online.
It is the studentfs responsibility to keep a copy of the registration form for their records. Students taking courses at our Quincy Adult & Graduate Studies location will need to arrange for their course materials as well. Books for courses being held at our off-site locations are sent to all students who are registered at least three weeks in advance. If you register after the three week deadline, you will need to contact your Academic Advisor to arrange for your course materials to be picked up or sent. Once your registration is complete, the Class Representativefs contact information will be sent to you.
We strongly recommend that you register four to five weeks before the start of the course you are planning to special register into. This allows time to process the registration (which includes Financial Aid adjustments) and ensures your name will be on attendance rosters. This also allows the time to receive course materials.
Q: How many credits do I need to receive my degree?
A: The number of credit hours you need to complete is dependent upon your degree.
Associate Programs:
You must successfully complete 63 credit hours. A minimum of 24 credit hours in business are required (of which 15 credit hours must be completed at ENC). Please refer to your Degree Requirements Evaluation Form (DREF) for your specific requirements.
Bachelor Programs:
You must successfully complete 123 credit hours. 60 credit hours are provided in your core program. You are responsible to fulfill the other 63 credit hours through transfer credits, DANTES/CLEP, Portfolio or other ENC courses. Please refer to your Degree Requirements Evaluation Form (DREF) for your specific requirements.
Master Programs:
You must successfully complete 36 credit hours. All of the credit hours are provided in your core program.
Q: What is the residency requirement?
A: Students are required to complete a specific number of credits through ENC courses. In the associate program, the minimum number of residency credits is 21 and in the bachelorfs programs it is 42. Portfolio credit, transfer credit and CLEP/DANTES credit are not considered residency credits.
Q: How do I fulfill my Physical Education requirement?
A: The Physical Education (P.E.) Log is no longer required, but may be necessary for you to complete your total number of credits. P.E. is assessed credit; it is not a course that can be taken here at the ENC Adult & Graduate Studies program. Students fulfill the P.E. credit(s) by documenting physical activities onto a log. Physical activities include, but are not limited to: walking, tennis, golf, swimming, baseball/softball, basketball, football, soccer, and hiking. If you are involved in a league sport or coach a league sport, you can document practice and game times.
A student can receive up to two credits in Physical Education. Twenty hours of documented activity is equivalent to one credit, and 40 hours of documented activity is equivalent to two credits. Students are asked to document the information in a P.E. log which is available at the Adult & Graduate Studies office and can be downloaded online.
Q: What are assessed credits? A: Assessed credits are those credits which are earned through: Portfolio evaluations (including corporate training, courses at unaccredited schools, courses for which CEUfs were awarded, etc.), CLEP and DANTES exams, and Physical Education credits.
Q: What is the Portfolio process and am I eligible to receive credits through it?
A: The Portfolio (Documented Learning) is one of the options students enrolled in the undergraduate programs in Adult & Graduate Studies can pursue to complete degree requirements. Through the proper collection and presentation of documents in the portfolio, you may petition for, and be awarded, college credit toward your undergraduate degree. The portfolio is designed to assist you in attaining your academic and career goals by validating the professional competency you have acquired outside the classroom. You can contact your Academic Advisor to request a Portfolio guide to be sent to you. Please note: these credits are only applied towards General Elective credits. They do not waive core courses in the bachelorfs programs.
Q: What are CLEP and DANTES?
A: Eastern Nazarene College participates in both CLEP (College Level Examination Program) and DANTES (Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Educational Support) credit-by-examination programs, which are administered through the Thomson Prometric DSST Program of Princeton, NJ. DANTES tests are administered at our Quincy site, located at 180 Old Colony Avenue, whereas CLEP tests are only accepted by us, not administered by us. For more information regarding CLEP and DANTES exams contact JoAnna Goodwin at 617-774-6714, in the ENC Adult & Graduate Studies office to request an information packet.?Please note: these exams only fulfill General Education requirements. They do not waive core courses in any program.
