expandDANTES Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I know which exams will satisfy the requirement I am trying to fulfill?

A: ENC students can refer to the links on this page entitled CLEP Policy and DANTE ENC Requirements.  If you still have questions, it is always best to consult with your Academic Advisor.  Students from other Academic Institutions should seek out the specific policy of their Institution.

Q: How much does it cost to take a DANTES exam and how may I pay?

A: Exams cost $100 each, if the reservation form is submitted before the deadline.  Any forms submitted late will be charged a $10 late fee.  Credit cards, cash, or money orders are acceptable payment methods for the exams.  Credit cards will be processed after the test date.  Cash and money orders must be paid to the office in advance.

Q: Can I take more than one exam on a given test date?

A: Students can take up to two exams on any given test date.  The average length of time it takes for a student to complete an exam is one and a half hours, but there is no time limitation.

Q: Can I sign up to take an exam tomorrow?

A: No.  The reservation form must be received at least 10 days before the test date so that the appropriate test can be ordered.

Q: Once I have decided on the test that I want to take and have chosen a date to take it, what do I need to do?

A: Students must submit a written reservation form to Angelica Wilson by the deadline corresponding to the desired date.  You may fax or mail the reservation form with payment information included.  Once the form is received, you will receive a confirmation call.

Q: Where do I go to take the exam?

A: The DANTES testing location is at the Adult and Graduate Studies Campus of Eastern Nazarene College, which is located at 180 Old Colony Avenue in Quincy, Massachusetts.  You will see signs when you enter through the front entrance and at the reception desk that will direct you to the appropriate room.

Q: Do I need to bring anything with me on the day of the exam?

A: A photo ID must be checked before a test is given to a student.  If you are using a credit card, please bring the card for verification.  Pencils are provided for students.  You may bring water, coffee, tea, etc. with you.  Please leave cell phones and pagers at home, or be sure to shut them off when entering the exam room.

Q: Once I take an exam, how long will I have to wait before the results come in?

A: DANTES test results are mailed to the student’s home as well as the Academic Institution indicated on the student’s answer sheet, 4-6 weeks after the exam date.  If a student needs results to be expedited, it is important to let the test administrator know the day of the exam.  There is an additional cost of $10 for ENC students and $25 for all other students for expedited results.  The results will be sent via FedEX to the school and the student within 2-4 weeks.

Q: What if I do not pass the exam?

A: It is DSST policy that students who fail a DANTES exam must wait six months to retake the same exam.  However, a student can choose to take a different exam at their convenience.

Q: I have registered for an exam, but something has come up, and I cannot make it for the test.  What should I do?

A: In the event that a student cannot test on a date that they have scheduled, it is the students responsibility to contact Angelica Wilson to cancel or reschedule the test. We ask for advance notice of the need to cancel or reschedule and will charge a penalty of $20 for a no call/no show

  • A cancellation should be made if a student no longer needs to take the test, or wants to reschedule but does not know a date on which they could reschedule.

  • A student should reschedule a test if they still want to take it, but simply cannot make it to the intended date.  To reschedule, a student must give a new date to Angelica Wilson. If a date is not given, the test will be cancelled and the student will have to submit a new reservation form when they have chosen a date.

Q: Should I study for the exam?

A: Yes! DANTES exams are similar to final exams in the subject area.  There are several ways to study for these exams.

  • Fact Sheets are available online for each exam. They list test specifications, offer a description of the test content, and sample questions typical of those encountered on the test. They can be downloaded from www.getcollegecredit.com Once there, click on “Student and Adult Learners” and on the left hand side, you will see “fact sheets.”  When you click on that, you will then have a list of all of the exams DSST offers and can choose the appropriate fact sheet.

  • DSST Practice Tests are available at www.getcollegecredit.com for an additional cost of $19.95.  These tests contain 20-25 questions, which reflect a partial range of difficulty identified in the Content Outline.

  • There are also new iStudySmart.com Courses (online or through workbook format) available for an affordable price for several DANTES and CLEP tests. More information can be obtained by visiting their website, www.iStudySmart.com.

  • Study Books, that are subject area textbooks, are also available on selected exams from the Adult Studies Office through the Educational Resources Department by calling 617-774-6827.
