Information and Instructions for Winter Commencement January 31, 2010

Regalia and Tickets
Regalia will arrive in our office by Wednesday, January 20, 2010.  Once you have been certified for graduation, you may pick up your regalia and four tickets at the Registrar’s Office window Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.  If you need to make alternate arrangements for pick-up, please call  (617-745-3878) or email jonathan.lanham@enc.edu

Pre-Ceremony
Graduates should assemble at 1:15 p.m. on Sunday afternoon in the Gathering Room of the Wollaston Church of the Nazarene (use lower level entrance on Wendell Avenue).  Graduates will be able to change into academic regalia in the Gathering Room.  This area will be reserved for graduates only.  Family members and other guests should enter the church through the front entrance that faces the campus off East Elm Avenue.

Procession
The Marshal will put the processional line in order.  Tassels are worn on the right (graduate students’ tassels are worn on the left) and caps are to be worn throughout the exercises, except for men at times of prayer.

The processional will move out from the Gathering Room at 1:45 up the front entrance stairs of the church to the main sanctuary and the Marshal will seat all those marching.  Graduates will be seated in the front of the middle section of the sanctuary as looking towards the platform.

Ceremony Procedure

  • Main address by speaker
  • Dean Ross will ask graduating class to stand; she will present them to the President
  • The President will speak briefly, awarding the respective degrees
  • When the President finishes speaking, all graduates (bachelor degree candidates only) should take tassel in RIGHT HAND and move it to LEFT SIDE. Technically, this is the moments of graduation.

Graduates will then move one row at a time, at the Marshal’s direction, to the platform to receive their respective degrees.  The Marshal will direct graduates to the platform steps.  The first person should take a position at the top step on the platform and stand there until his/her name is called. Dean Ross will read each name at the same pace and students will step across the platform to shake hands with the President and receive their diploma, graduates will continue to move across the platform and down the stairs on the opposite side that they entered.  Once off the platform, they will move back to their seat in the sanctuary.

Master Degree Candidates
Master degree hoods are carried over the left arm.  As graduate students come on the platform, the hood is handed to the appropriate program coordinator at which time the candidate is hooded.  The graduate then proceeds across the platform to receive their diploma.

End of Ceremony and Receiption
At the end of the ceremony, there will be a recessional back up the center aisle.  Move out as directed by the Marshal. All graduates and their guests are welcome to join us for a reception immediately following the ceremony in the Metcalfe Gathering Room, lower level of the church.

Graduation Information

Graduation Honors
Graduation honors are awarded to students who have the following final minimum cumulative grade point averages:

  • Summa Cum Laude 3.9
  • Magna Cum Laude 3.7
  • Cum Laude 3.5

Students who are in the top 15% of their graduating class and have completed a minimum of 42 credits at ENC are eligible for nomination to the Phi Delta Lambda National Nazarene Honor Society.

Degree Candidacy
To be considered a candidate for a baccalaureate degree in any specific year, the student must have filed an application for degree candidacy and a degree audit report signed by the student’s advisor. The application is due no later than November 1 of the junior year. The report states how all requirements for graduation are to be met, and the student must have had this application approved by the registrar. Any change in the student’s approved program may delay his/her graduation. Only candidates for a degree will participate in the formal activities of the senior year. A late fee of $25 is charged for late submissions during the junior year. Students who submit a degree candidacy form the same academic year as their graduation are charged a $50 late fee. No student will participate in commencement unless all scholastic and financial requirements have been met. Faculty advisors and the registrar are freely available to assist students in planning their programs, but the ultimate responsibility of meeting all requirements for the degree rests entirely with the individual student.

Staying on Track to Graduate - Degree Audit Reports
Students are responsible for reviewing the catalog and knowing their degree requirements. It is up to students to review their progress after each semester to ensure they are staying on track to graduate. Degree audit reports are available for students to help track their progress and to register for classes. The reports show which courses are needed to complete a specific major and what courses have been taken. Audit reports are available to students through the Registrar’s Office by emailing a request to registrar@enc.edu or may be printed by your advisor.

Graduation Requirements - Participation in Graduation
Students who have satisfied all degree requirements are cleared academically to march in graduation. However, students must also be cleared financially and by the Student Life Office in order to participate. Financially Cleared: The Bursar’s Office has the authority to put a student on financial hold to not participate in graduation if the student owes money to the college. Student Life Office: The office can impose disciplinary action that includes forfeiture of participation in graduation ceremonies.

Petition to Participate in Graduation
Students who are no more than 3 courses short of meeting graduation requirements may participate in the May graduation ceremony, if they provide a plan to complete degree requirements and submit the Petition to Participate in Graduation contract. The student must specify exactly when and where he/she will take the remaining courses. If the student is taking courses somewhere other than ENC, the student must provide course descriptions and a Pre-Approval to Transfer form for evaluation of the course by the Registrar’s Office and/or department major. Students may not petition to participate in the Winter Commencement.
